ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
The Digital Studies (0.5 credit) requirement for graduation is intended to advance students from being computer users to being computationally literate creators. The Digital Studies credit includes competencies associated with the field/discipline of computing, aligned to current trends in technology, provide problem solving, reasoning, communication, and computational thinking. To achieve this, students may choose to take one of six approved courses. The class to meet this requirement may be taken any time during 9th -12th grade. Students may take additional Digital Studies courses after they have met the .5 requirement. Any additional courses taken will count towards the CTE or Elective graduation requirements.

This course is designed for students to learn beginning through advanced concepts in using word processing, spreadsheet, database, and electronic presentation software (Microsoft Office). The skills learned in this class will help students in using software applications to complete assignments in high school classes, obtain employment, and prepare for further education after school. Students will integrate applications learned. State Competency Certificate available.

Computer Essentials is the concurrent enrollment version of Business Office Specialist. This course is a hands-on introduction to problem-solving using office productivity tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint). Basic hardware, software, networking, internet, and computer theory topics are discussed. It is intended to help the student become computer literate and computer competent. The course curriculum is directed at preparing the student to use the computer as an everyday problem-solving tool. Students will have the opportunity to obtain a Microsoft Office Specialist industry certificate. The certification is recognized worldwide as the best method for employers to validate computer skill proficiency. State Competency Certificate available.

Exploring Computer Science is a hands-on course designed to introduce you to programming and problem solving. All students, regardless of technical background, will learn concepts for the computer science field. Rather than focusing the entire course on learning software tools or programming languages, the course is designed to focus on the conceptual ideas of computing and help students understand why certain tools or languages might be utilized to solve particular problems. The first quarter you will learn how computers and people interact and problem-solving techniques. The second quarter you will learn how to code stories and games with Scratch.
