MATHEMATICS

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

3.0 math credits are required for graduation.

Secondary I, II, III are required for graduation.

Secondary III can be replaced by an Applied or Advanced Course with written parent request.

All mathematics classes require a prerequisite of the knowledge acquired in the previous math class, which may mean a student will need to repeat a year of math to be successful in consecutive courses.

Modern Math (579700)

Length: Year

Available For: 11th, 12th

Fee: $0.00

This course introduces students to topics in Modern Mathematics as they apply to real-world contexts. The course extends students’ understanding of the mathematics developed in Secondary I Math and Secondary II Math. The course is intended to help students develop an understanding of how mathematics describes and explains the world in which they live. This is a good alternative to Secondary III Mathematics if students are missing credit or have struggled with Secondary Math I or II.

This course does count towards graduation but does not adequately prepare students for college. Students planning on attending college or a university should take a different 3rd or 4th year of math.

College Prep Math (579750)

Length: Year

Available For: 11th, 12th

Fee: $0.00

College Prep Math formalizes and reinforces concepts from the Secondary Mathematics series to provide students with the foundational skills and understanding prerequisite to College Algebra (1050). Students who did not qualify for concurrent enrollment math can take this class to be prepared for college level math.
This is also a great math course for junior students who may have struggled through Secondary Math I and Secondary Math II as it will review key concepts that will be necessary for taking Secondary Math III their senior year

Math 1030 Quantitative Reasoning CE (708421)

Length: Semester

Available For: 12th

Fee: $25.00 + $40 enrollment fee (see below for details) - paid to SLCC

This is a course in modern mathematics. We will be exploring a number of topics that have been developed fairly recently in the mathematical world, along with some more traditional ones. This class will be nothing like your intermediate algebra course. If you prefer equations and expressions, this is not the class for you. We will be looking at topics that might not seem like math to you. Many of these topics will be explored in context of their applications. The purpose of this course is to expose you to the wider world of mathematical thinking. There are two reasons for this. First, for you to understand the power of quantitative thinking and the power of numbers in solving and dealing with real world scenarios. Secondly, for you to understand that there is more to mathematics than expressions and equations.

Prerequisite: A C grade or higher in Secondary Mathematics I, II, & III every term or an ACT score of 19 or higher in both math and reading.  $15.00. ($5.00 per credit hour tuition due through SLCC) Students earn high school and college credit. $10.00 online homework fee paid to SLCC.

Math 1050 College Algebra CE (708461)

Length: Semester

Available For: 12th

Fee: $30.00 + $40 enrollment fee (see below for details) - paid to SLCC

The course is an algebra class designed to prepare students to enter either engineering or calculus courses. It continues to explore, in greater depth, standard algebra topics many of which were addressed in Sec Math 1, 2 & 3. College Algebra satisfies quantitative literacy requirements for college graduation. Students earn both high school and college credit.

Prerequisite: a 23 math and 18 reading ACT score. $20.00 ($5.00 per credit hour tuition due through SLCC) $40.00 (onetime fee to enroll as a concurrent enrollment student.  This fee is good for all concurrent enrollment classes taken thru SLCC) $10.00 online homework fee paid to SLCC

AP Statistics (579520)

Length: Year

Available For: 11th, 12th

AP Statistics Test Fee: $95.00

This is designed as a non-calculus-based statistics course. The purpose of the course in statistics is to introduce students to the major concepts and tools for collecting, analyzing and drawing conclusions from data. Students are exposed to four broad conceptual themes: 1- Exploring Data: Observing patterns and departures from patterns, 2- Planning a study: Deciding what and how to measure, 3- Anticipating Patterns in Advance: Producing models using probability and simulations, and 4- Statistical Inference: Confirming models. This class is all about interpreting data.  Math is done primarily using technology and there is a lot of writing about the results. Upon passing the advanced placement examination, students may receive up to four semester hours of college credit.

A Graphing calculator with statistical applications will be required.

AP Calculus AB (579350)

Length: Year

Available For: 11th, 12th

AP Calculus AB Test Fee: $95.00

This course is equivalent to the freshman level university courses in differential and integral calculus. Topics studied include limits, continuity, differentiation, integration, and their application to real world problems. The advanced placement exam analyzes a student’s ability to apply concepts, make connections from graphical, numerical, analytical, and verbal representations of mathematics. Upon passing the advanced placement examination, students may receive up to eight semester hours of college calculus credit.  Prerequisite: Secondary Math 3

Graphing calculators will be required.

AP Pre-Calculus  (579010)

AP Pre-Calculus focuses on content from previous classes to prepare you for a more in-depth study of mathematics, namely Calculus. Designed to follow either Secondary Math II or Secondary Math III, this full-year course builds upon your understanding of various aspects of mathematics, including fundamental concepts of Algebra and Trigonometry. Taking AP Precalculus prepares you for future college-level mathematics and science courses, while providing you an opportunity to earn college credit along with high school credit. The course framework outlines content and skills needed for careers in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business and education. College credit earned could be equivalent to MATH 1050 and MATH 1060 or MATH 1080.

AP Pre-Calculus Test Fee: $95.00
