This week was a poignant reminder of the profound impact that empathy and compassion can have on a student's well-being. During Mrs. Weir's class, one of the students experienced an emotional outburst that disrupted the classroom environment. Rather than reprimanding him for his behavior, I instinctively approached him with empathy and understanding, seeking to address the underlying cause of his distress. Lowering myself to his level, I gently inquired about his well-being and offered a listening ear. I asked if anything was troubling him and reassured him that he could confide in me if he felt comfortable. He hesitated and decided to say nothing, so I suggested that he could write down his thoughts and feelings in a letter if he found it difficult to express them verbally. To my surprise and gratitude, he eagerly embraced this suggestion and poured his heart out onto paper. His letter was incredibly detailed and provided deep insights into his emotional struggles. Recognizing the importance of supporting him beyond the classroom, I promptly shared his letter with the school counselor, who immediately reached out to his parents. Together, we collaborated to ensure that he received the help and support he needed. The following day, the counselor informed me that he will begin attending therapy sessions starting that day.
Witnessing the positive impact of our intervention on this student’s well-being was profoundly rewarding. In recent weeks, I've encountered significant challenges in managing disruptive behavior in Mrs. Weir's classroom. Despite employing various strategies, such as giving “checks” or taking away recess, the students' response has been less than ideal. It became evident that traditional disciplinary measures were ineffective in fostering long-term behavioral changes and creating a positive classroom environment. Recognizing the need for a different approach, Mrs. Weir graciously allowed me to implement my token economy system, known as "Des Dollars," as a form of positive reinforcement. The transition to the token economy system marked a turning point in classroom dynamics. As I began distributing "Des Dollars" to students who demonstrated positive behavior, such as staying focused on tasks and participating actively in discussions, I noticed a remarkable transformation in their demeanor. It was as if a switch had been flipped – suddenly, students who were previously disruptive or disengaged became attentive, motivated, and eager to earn rewards. What struck me the most was the immediate and tangible impact of positive reinforcement on student behavior. Whenever I introduced "Des Dollars" into the classroom, there was a noticeable shift in the atmosphere. Students straightened up, ceased their chatter, and redirected their focus towards their work with renewed determination.
It was a stark contrast to the challenges we faced previously, and it reaffirmed the power of positive reinforcement in shaping behavior and fostering a supportive learning environment. I believe the success of the token economy system lies in its ability to reframe students' perceptions of authority and discipline. Rather than viewing me as a stern disciplinarian who metes out punishments, students now see me as a facilitator of rewards for their positive actions. By aligning incentives with desired behaviors, the token economy system not only encourages compliance but also cultivates intrinsic motivation and a sense of ownership over one's actions. As I continue to refine and implement the token economy system in the classroom, I am optimistic about its potential to promote positive behavior and enhance the overall learning experience for students. With Mrs. Weir's guidance and support, I am confident that we create a classroom environment where every student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed. Implementing a token economy system in Mrs. Weir's classroom has been a transformative experience, offering valuable insights into effective classroom management and the power of positive reinforcement. This opportunity has equipped me with practical knowledge and highlighted the importance of flexibility, innovation, and collaboration in addressing classroom challenges. By witnessing the positive impact on student behavior and engagement, I am better prepared to create a supportive and inclusive learning environment in my future teaching career.

I had the privilege of witnessing a remarkable example of teacher collaboration and cooperation in action. The educators in this dynamic learning environment operate as a tightly-knit team, seamlessly sharing insights, strategies, and innovative approaches to address various standards. It was neat to see how they combined their collective wisdom to tackle challenges and develop lesson plans that cater to the diverse needs of their students. This collaborative spirit isn’t limited to formal meetings; it is a daily practice. The teachers openly discussed different ways to approach specific standards, providing one another with a wealth of creative ideas and practical solutions. This collaborative culture not only enriched the learning experience for the students but also served as a profound reminder of the immense value of teamwork in education, emphasizing that when teachers unite their efforts, it is the students who reap the greatest benefits.

Observing the classroom today, I couldn't help but notice the influence of seating arrangements on student behavior. My CI rearranged the desks today and it made all the difference. The classroom was set up with different configurations, and it was fascinating to witness how these arrangements influenced the dynamics within the class. In clusters where students were grouped closely together, I noticed more collaboration and lively discussions. They appeared more engaged, feeding off each other's energy. On the other hand, rows and individual desks seemed to encourage a quieter, more focused atmosphere, which was ideal for independent work. The versatility of these arrangements highlighted the importance of adapting the classroom layout to match the learning objectives and the unique needs of the students. It underscored the pivotal role teachers play in creating an environment that supports various modes of learning and behavior, promoting both collaboration and concentration as necessary. Something else that makes a big difference is certain students sitting next to each other. Some students are just unable to focus when sitting next to each other.
Today's classroom observation left me deeply aware of how crucial seating arrangements are in shaping student behavior. The simple act of rearranging the desks, orchestrated by my cooperating instructor, had a transformative impact. It was riveting to witness how different configurations of seating influenced the classroom dynamics. Additionally, I couldn't help but notice the significance of individual students' seating placement. Certain students appear to excel when seated separately, particular peers can be a distraction for these students. This revelation underscores the notion that as educators, we must consider not only the overall classroom arrangement but also the individual dynamics within it. The art of seating, it seems, is a subtle yet impactful aspect of the teaching profession that plays a pivotal role in shaping the learning experience for students.

Today marked a significant step out of my comfort zone as a student-teacher. My CI assigned me the task of working with students who scored the lowest on the current class topic. This challenge led me to a small group of six students, each displaying varying degrees of comprehension. What was really neat was the wide spectrum of abilities within this group. Some students were proficient and required minimal guidance, while others appeared entirely lost, unsure of where to even begin. In response, I embarked on the journey of re-teaching the nuances of decimal division, meticulously explaining each step along the way. My role evolved into that of a patient guide, as I embraced this task of re-teaching decimal division. With patience and encouragement, I walked them through each step, breaking down the concept in a manner that was both comprehensive and understandable. In the midst of this, my CI extended an open invitation to the entire class, encouraging them to direct their questions to me. This made things a little difficult, as I assisted this small group, I found additional students approaching me for clarifications on specific problems, which necessitated brief pauses to provide concise explanations. This multitasking was slightly overwhelming, yet I managed it with confidence. It required me to momentarily shift my focus and provide clear, concise explanations to those in need. This experience left an indelible mark on my understanding of effective teaching. It served as a poignant reminder of the importance of delivering explicit, step-by-step instruction to ensure that every student, regardless of their prior grasp of the subject, had the opportunity to comprehend and engage meaningfully in the learning process.
The experience of working with the lowest-scoring students in the class was a transformative one. It pushed me well beyond my comfort zone, but it was a remarkable learning opportunity. Re-teaching the students gave me valuable insight, my mission was to deconstruct the concept into manageable, comprehensible steps, making sure every student had a chance to grasp it. My CI's encouragement for the entire class to seek help from me added another layer of complexity. The classroom dynamic shifted as more students approached me for explanations on specific problems, requiring me to pivot my focus in real-time. The multitasking was undeniably overwhelming at times, but I managed it with newfound confidence. This experience reaffirmed the critical importance of delivering explicit, step-by-step instruction to ensure that every student, regardless of their prior knowledge, had the opportunity to comprehend and actively engage in the learning process. It reminded me that effective teaching isn't just about covering the material but making it accessible to all, reinforcing the idea that as educators, our role is to facilitate understanding and create an inclusive learning environment for every student.

Observing the fifth graders during lunch and recess was an eye-opening experience. Lunchtime served as an important social opportunity for the students. They gathered in the cafeteria, chatting and sharing stories, fostering connections beyond the confines of the classroom. It was neat to see how these moments of togetherness allowed them to unwind and build friendships. As we transitioned to recess, I watched the students burst out into the playground with boundless energy and enthusiasm. The playground became a hub of activity, with games, laughter, and a flurry of movement. It was clear that recess was more than just a break; it was a crucial outlet for the students to release their pent-up energy, promoting physical well-being and balance in their day. These experiences underscored the significance of both lunch and recess in the development of students, serving not only as a pause in the academic routine but as essential opportunities for social growth and physical activity. Seeing the positive impact of recess, I have also witnessed the negative effects of not allowing recess. I have noticed that when the students aren’t allowed the 20 minutes of recess that is incorporated into their schedule, they don’t focus on their work as much. They are antsy and find any reason to get out of their seats. Recess can be crucial for the students as it allows them to exercise while interacting with their peers.
Observing lunch and recess provided invaluable insights into the multifaceted nature of a student's day. The lunch period revealed the vital role it plays socially, allowing students to bond and connect. Recess highlighted the pivotal role it plays in physical and emotional well-being. The playground became a hub of vibrant movement and laughter, showcasing how recess isn't just a break but a much-needed outlet for pent-up energy. It was a powerful reminder of the development of students, where social growth and physical activity are integral components. In observing this, I couldn't help but reflect on the adverse effects of not allowing recess. The students' restlessness and difficulty in focusing on their work were noticeable when they missed this vital break. This experience reinforced the importance of incorporating recess into the daily routine, recognizing its value not only for physical activity but also for enhancing students' focus, engagement, and overall well-being.

Transitioning from observing a dynamic math class to an equally vibrant ELA classroom was a refreshing change of pace. As I entered, I was greeted by posters adorning the walls, each one infused with ELA topics and uplifting messages. It was evident that the teacher had created an immersive environment, filled with literary quotes, inspirational authors, and colorful word walls. The classroom seemed like a haven for budding wordsmiths and aspiring storytellers. The teacher's approach to ELA instruction was equally engaging, as students delved into thought-provoking literature and participated in animated discussions about characters, themes, and narrative elements. The transition highlighted the incredible diversity of teaching methods, demonstrating the profound impact educators can have on students' understanding and appreciation of language and literature. It was a compelling reminder of the multifaceted role teachers play in shaping young minds across various subjects. The CI I am having the opportunity to learn from is retiring in May. Fortunately, I will be able to gain as much insight as I can from her until then!
The teacher's engaging approach to ELA instruction, coupled with the animated student discussions about literature, showcased the art of inspiring young minds through the world of stories and written expression. This shift between subjects emphasized the incredible diversity of teaching methods and the profound influence educators can have on students' understanding and appreciation of different disciplines. It reinforced the multifaceted role that teachers play in shaping the holistic development of young minds. The knowledge that my cooperating teacher, who has been a wealth of wisdom and guidance, will be retiring in May adds a bittersweet layer to this journey. However, it's a motivation to make the most of the time left, soaking in as much insight as I can from her expertise and experience. It's a privilege to learn from a dedicated educator who has left an indelible mark on the students and the classroom environment.

This morning I learned something in a fifth-grade math class that I haven’t learned in all of my years of schooling. The “9’s trick”. A simple way of keeping up with the multiples of nine, if you can’t remember off the top of your head. You write the numbers 0-9 vertically and go back up with the same numbers in the opposite direction. There you have the multiples of nine! I was so fascinated with it and it helped a lot of the students to remember these specific multiples. Students can get easily frustrated with problems that seem too hard for them, therefore, I think it's extremely important to provide the students with small tips and tricks on how to remember simple parts of an equation. This level of math may seem easy for us adults that already know how to do it, however, for the students it’s much harder. These students are learning a lot at one time, as well as, learning all of this for the first time. They have not had years of practice as we all have. My CI has tons of tricks for the students to use and it’s really neat seeing the students incorporate them into their problem solving.
It's remarkable how a seemingly simple technique can make a significant impact on students' understanding and confidence in math. This experience reinforced the idea that teaching goes beyond just imparting knowledge; it's about finding creative and effective ways to support students, especially when they encounter challenges. My CI’s stash of tricks and techniques, such as the "9's trick," reflects the expertise and dedication that experienced educators bring to the classroom. Witnessing students incorporate these strategies into their problem-solving processes was not only inspiring but a testament to the power of innovative teaching methods in making a lasting impact on young minds. As an educator, we must be prepared to provide students with the tools they need to succeed, while fostering a supportive learning environment that encourages exploration and growth.

I walked into the classroom this morning, the hum of young voices has yet to fill the room. This year we have to arrive early and wait for the students to arrive as well, as we are simulating every role of an educator. The room is decorated with hand-made posters containing math and science topics that are far more advanced than what I've had a chance to observe. The student’s chairs are arranged into a combination of tables and desks in scattered rows, and I can sense the anticipation among them. They're not as physically tiny as the kindergartners I taught before, but their eagerness to learn is just as palpable, with a mixture of stubbornness. It’s interesting to see the difference in attitudes among the fifth graders, if they do not agree with something they will speak up in a very direct manner. If these students get confused, they get frustrated more easily and may want to give up sooner than kindergarten and first graders do. It’s neat to learn what influences them the most. They don’t respond well to negative reinforcement at all, however, positive reinforcement and feedback encourages them to engage and behave in a positive manner.
The diversity of attitudes among these fifth graders is captivating. They aren't shy about voicing their disagreements, and their frustration when confusion sets in can be a challenge. It's intriguing to witness the differences between them and their younger counterparts. This moment serves as a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of education, a continuous learning process not just for the students, but for me as a teacher. The realization that positive reinforcement and feedback are essential tools in this classroom is a valuable insight. This group thrives on encouragement, and it's heartening to recognize how I can influence their engagement and behavior in a positive manner. This morning's observations reinforce the idea that teaching is not a one-size-fits-all endeavor but a dynamic journey of understanding, adapting, and nurturing young minds.

Today marked the beginning of a new chapter in my journey as a student teacher, and I can't help but feel a mix of excitement and nervousness as I embark on this year-long adventure. Unlike my previous placements in kindergarten and first-grade classrooms, this year, I find myself in the vibrant world of fifth graders. It's quite the leap from the tiny chairs and finger paintings of early childhood education to the more mature and independent world of upper elementary students. The first day brought both excitement and jitters. Fifth graders have their own set of challenges and expectations. They're more independent, opinionated, and have a natural curiosity about the world. They're not as reliant on me as their kindergarten counterparts, which is both liberating and daunting. I have to adapt my teaching style to engage and inspire these young minds, encouraging them to think critically and explore deeper concepts.
One thing I've noticed right away is that the dynamics in this classroom are different. Friendships are more established, and there's an emerging sense of self-identity among the students. It's both fascinating and challenging to navigate the social intricacies that come with this age group.
Reflecting on this first day, I remind myself that while this year may be a bit nerve-wracking, it's also an incredible opportunity for growth. I'm excited to witness the intellectual and emotional development of these fifth graders and to be a part of their educational journey until May. There will be trials and tribulations, but I'm ready to face them head-on, armed with the knowledge that this year will shape me into a more experienced and capable educator. I cannot wait to see the adventures and discoveries that lie ahead in room C-9!

Today was my last day in the classroom. It was a bittersweet day. The students have made such an impact on me. I have formed so many connections with them that it breaks my heart to say goodbye so soon. However, it further excites me for my future classroom of students. Watching these students grow and their curiosity for learning grow with them has been such a gratifying experience. I have had such an edifying experience at Desoto Central Primary, observing and participating in students’ educational journeys. These entries highlight the importance of incorporating engaging and interactive activities, such as games, music, and technology, into the classroom to enhance learning and maintain student interest. I had the opportunity to observe the value of collaboration, creativity, and individualized attention in helping students learn and grow. Overall, my CI offered several insights into effective teaching strategies and the importance of fostering a positive and engaging classroom environment.

Today, the students worked on a collaborative art project. They colored bunny ears in preparation for Easter. The teacher provided them with a variety of art supplies and encouraged them to be creative with their work. The students worked together to come up with fun new ideas and all got together at the end for a class picture. It was wonderful to see how the students supported and encouraged each other, and how proud they were of their final product.

Today in class, the students used tablets to learn about different types of insects. They watched videos and looked at pictures of ants, bees, butterflies, and grasshoppers. They also used an app to build their own virtual insect by selecting different body parts and colors. They were fascinated by the diversity of insect life and enjoyed learning about their characteristics and behaviors. It was impressive to see how quickly they have adapted to using the technology and how engaged they were in learning about the insects.

During class today, the students learned a new song about the seasons. The teacher taught them the lyrics and melody, and they practiced singing and dancing along. The teacher mentioned to the students that they can listen and dance to the different musical concepts such as the rhythm or the tempo. It was amazing to see how much joy and energy they brought to the classroom. It was clear that they were having fun while developing their musical skills. I will definitely be incorporating music into my classroom, the students connect well with it and it has shown to encourage them tremendously.
March 23, 2023
In a writing workshop today, the students wrote short stories about their favorite springtime activity. They brainstormed ideas and developed their stories with the help of the teacher, teacher assistant, and I. They worked hard to add details and descriptive language to their writing. When they finished their stories, they shared them with the class. It was heartwarming to see how creative and imaginative they were, and how eager they were to share their stories with their peers. I was able to see a lot of the syntax issues students experience in the classroom. I was given the opportunity to work with the students individually and get to experience first-hand how to implement these instructional strategies.
March 9, 2023
During class today, I had the opportunity to introduce a math game to the students. I asked for the opinion of my CI for different ways to influence the students. We both came to the conclusion of playing a game of "Math Bingo." I would call out simple math problems such as simple addition and subtraction equations, while the students had to match the numbers on their bingo cards with the answers to the problems. The students were excited to play and showed a ton of enthusiasm for the game. It was a fun and engaging way for them to practice their math skills. This activity is something that I will carry into my classroom as well. The students interacted well with each other, and they definitely enjoyed winning small prizes. There were very few times that a student got distracted, the main issue was keeping their excitement under control.
March 6, 2023
Today, I witnessed the progress check of a science experiment the students started a couple of weeks ago, in which the students planted seeds in small cups and now get to observe how they grow over time. The students were excited to see the progress of their plants while the teacher discussed the importance of water and sunlight in plant growth. It was great to see how engaged and curious they were about their plant’s progress. The students were excited to learn more about their plant and what goes into helping it to grow.
February 27, 2023
The first thing I noticed about the students in first grade compared to kindergarten is that the students are much more independent. When they have been given a task and told how to complete it, they simply get to work. They are mostly doing independent work while the teachers are assisting one small group at a time. They have multiple different stations or “centers”. They rotate throughout these stations, which ensures that every single student gets one on one time with the teacher every day. First grade is really interesting, I was able to see how much the students have enjoyed learning and excelled. There is so much growth in the students during the stages transitioning from kinder to first.

I am student-teaching at Desoto Central Primary this semester. The first piece of advice I was given was on the way back from lunch when the students were riled up. My CI explained that the students are very competitive at this age and want to race to do everything. She mentioned that a good way to keep hallway chaos under control could include giving the students a designated number to line up by. This prevents the students from racing to line up and fighting over who is first in line and who gets what spot. I will definitely be implementing this into my classroom, however, I am also including line leader and line caboose as a classroom reward.

Today, the instructor went over high-frequency words. She called the students over to the carpet, group by group, and had them all sit down in front of her. She has a humongous stack of note cards that contain each letter and several high-frequency words. She begins with letters, asking what the letter is and then what sound it makes. After that she moves on with the words, as she pulls out each one she starts by asking for the beginning sounds, asking the students what sound each word starts with. Following that, she moves onto onset rime. She begins by asking the students what the beginning sound of the word is, what the rest of the word is, and finally having them repeat the entire word. The students had a fantastic understanding of everything the instructor was asking of them. When there were students who would say the wrong thing the teacher would stop and ask them specifically to ensure that they understood. The students are extremely smart and extremely excited with everything they do and accomplish. I am ready to inspire my own group of students.
November 15, 2022
Today, I am observing Mrs. Weaver. She has started the class off with their letters again. I know that this is key for the students. She follows that up by reviewing beginning letter sounds. She gives the students three words, two having the same beginning sound and one that is different. She then asks the students which one doesn’t belong.
The students began to yawn and get distracted, so they’re having snack time to encourage them to wake up a little. After snack time Mrs. Weaver began spelling words out letter by letter and asking the students what the word is. They were surprisingly very good at this.
The students have gone to activity and I am now observing how the instructor makes conference calls to parents. She begins by asking if she is speaking with the students' parent or guardian. She then follows that with who she is, and states that the teachers like to make calls to parents to touch base with them before christmas and to see if they have any questions or concerns. She starts the conversation off with what the student is doing extremely well in, and follows that up with any issues that the student may have trouble with.
November 9th, 2022
Today, I completed my Read Aloud lesson. I was extremely nervous all morning long. When I got into the classroom Mrs. Weaver had a couple of topics she wanted to cover with the students beforehand. I observed the students and prepared for my activity when Mrs. Weaver was ready for me to step in. The students were already on the carpet so I walked over and began reading my book. The moment that I sat down in front of the students and saw all of their eager, gleaming eyes, my nerves melted away. Instead, they were replaced with excitement. I read a book to them and they were on the edge of their seats the entire time. I asked them questions throughout the story, they were asking questions themselves, it was a truly rewarding experience. It showed me how wonderful it is to encourage the students in what they are interested in. They all knew the answers to the questions I was asking them and they were so excited and so confident in themselves. Afterwards, I had a group of the students come to the table and complete an activity about the book. This was a fun part for the students especially, considering it was mainly coloring. They had a ton of fun completing the activity and showing off their creativity to their classmates. I had a lot of fun today, it gave me a tremendous boost of confidence concerning my future in the classroom. I can’t wait to make an impact in my future students' lives.
November 2, 2022
Today, I am getting to observe and assist Mrs. Weaver. Right now, she is going over rhyming words. She is saying two different words and having the students repeat them back to her and follow it with “yes” or “no”, based on whether they rhyme. The students are doing very well with the exercise. Mrs. Weaver is now going over beginning sounds with the students. She is giving the students three words and having them “punch” out the beginning sound of the words. She gave them the words: “cat, cash, and cup” she then instructed them to repeat the words and punch the beginning sound.
She is now saying a word and having the students replace the beginning sound with a different letter.
Ex: “I have a knee, now replace the /N/ with /K/, now I have a? “KEY”.
She follows that up by sending the students to their desks and reviewing the alphabet. She points to a picture, while having the students say the letter associated with it, followed by the sound, and a word that begins with that letter. After getting through the entire alphabet she pulled up a song and they are singing along and dancing to a song that is repeating what Mrs. Weaver just went over with them. Repetition is extremely important for the students.
October 26, 2022
Today, while I was observing the instructor, I watched her continue to go over phonemic awareness. I didn't realize that at this point in the year they would still be learning letters and correlating them to their sounds. It really illustrates to me how long the students actually need to learn and comprehend new things. The instructor calls the students over to the carpet, she begins by using her note cards. She pulls them out one by one and asks what the letter is. After the students, in unison, say the letter, she asks for the sound the letter makes. She is now going over sounds at the beginning of words. She does this by pulling up pictures of objects the students are able to recognize and asking them to identify the sound and letter the words begin with. The students excelled in this, however more struggle with this than I have seen struggle with any other activity so far.
I came over to another classroom and the first thing that I have noticed is that they sit in groups, however, the teacher tells them what group they are in that day because it changes each day. I really like that idea because it allows the students to all get to know each other, as well as not get too comfortable in a certain group. I really enjoy getting to see several different teaching techniques and classroom styles.
October 12, 2022
Today, I got to observe Mrs. McCloud instruct. The first thing I noticed was how she immediately got her student's attention by saying “show me your watching eyes”, when all of the students pointed to their eyes, she followed that with “show me your listening ears”. The kids were immediately engaged and began following her instruction. She is teaching them the ending sounds of words. She, like Mrs. Weaver, has incorporated fun little things for them to do while they sound out the end sounds of words. She has them clap out the syllables of the word and then punch the air on the ending sound.
The instructor chose from name sticks and had the students come up the board and asked them to circle the letter that makes the _____ sound. The instructor sings along with the students as they dance to educational songs and she does hand motions with the songs with them. This gets the students even more engaged in the songs compared to other classrooms, where I have seen an instructor sit down and let the students do it by themselves.
She is now showing the students pictures of objects and asking them to write out the sound that it begins with.
Ex: “What is this object?” “A watch.” “Good, now write what the beginning letter of that word is”.
She also has a composition book for each of the students that they glue their activities inside of each day. She said at the end of the year they will take them home with them to show their parents. This is an idea that I will definitely be carrying along with me into my classroom. I think it’s a fun way for the students and the parents to get to see everything that the students have accomplished that year.
The instructor also taught about the five senses today. Something I thought was very important that she included while going over the five senses, was that she made sure to go over the fact that some people don’t have all five senses. This instructor was educational and had very good classroom management skills.
October 5, 2022
Today, I got to observe several different instructors. I noticed that one of the instructors I observed did not have everything prepared before class and rather just went looking for assignments, books, and papers as she needed them. It was interesting to see the difference in the classroom behavior just from that aspect alone. The students seem to be uninterested in what they are learning, instead they talk and play with their friends every time the teacher turns her head or begins looking for something. The instructor has had to call out to them several times to get their attention. Another teacher that I am observing today is assisting the students with learning and working on blending words. She is very good at keeping the students engaged. Right now, she is making a letter sound, asking the students to say the letter or letters it consists of, and then she is telling them to write it. They are all very confident in what they know. She has now asked all of the students to come to the carpet. She has asked for words from the students that begin with certain letters or sounds and has written them down on a big dry erase board in front of them, including “nonsense words”. I think this was a great way to demonstrate to the students the connection between the phoneme and the grapheme.
September 28, 2022
Today, was my first time observing a class. The students were extremely welcoming and very excited to have someone new in their classroom. Each and every single one of them needed to give me a hug, one at a time, might I add. It was the sweetest and funniest thing. Each one waited until the next one hugged me and sat back down before they got up to come give me a hug. The first thing in the classroom that I took note of were the walls. I wanted to see the different posters and material she incorporated into her classroom. She of course had the ABC’s and the 123’s, but I noticed that everything goes by a color scheme, which allows it all to flow very well. She also has a big calendar, with all of the months and the numbers listed out huge, with all of the student’s birthdays on it. She moves the magnet each day, I think this is a cute way for the students to get to learn the months. I got to observe Mrs. Weaver assist the students with learning their syllables. She did this by first saying a word to the students and then having them clap/punch/snap along to each syllable. The students seem to enjoy this exercise a lot, I think the physical activity incorporated into this lesson kept the students interested and excited. Mrs. Molly Weaver is a fantastic instructor and works extremely well with the students. I am excited to be a part of her class for the next few weeks.
