This artifact came from a time that I was student-teaching at Desoto-Central Primary. I was given the opportunity to observe and assist in a first-grade classroom. I incorporated different learning techniques and information acquired throughout my EDRD 400 class and the CI I was observing. This classroom had a great environment and a ton of diverse students, including ELL students, advanced students, and remedial students.
In my field experience, a moment that impacted me as a teacher was when my clinical instructor asked me if I would give one of the students that have an IEP an updated letter exam. It was a simple task, but it demonstrated to me how important these tests can be to the student. I would display a flashcard containing a random letter from the alphabet and have her answer what the letter is. I learned where the student struggled and what exactly she struggled with. I was able to see what clicked with her while I was explaining the difference in letters, and what may have further confused her. It was a great opportunity, I was able to experience giving an IEP letter exam and how it works, while implementing strategies learned in the classroom.
InTASC Standard 1: Learner Development
The teacher understands how learners grow and develop, recognizing that patterns of learning and development vary individually within and across the cognitive, linguistic, social, emotional, and physical areas, and designs and implements developmentally appropriate and challenging learning experiences.
This artifact is evidence of growth in this standard because the student teacher displays encouragement and guidance throughout the lesson while recognizing patterns of learning and incorporating different teaching techniques to assist the students.
CEC Standard 1: Learner Development and Individual Learning DifferencesÂ
Beginning special education professionals understand how exceptionalities may interact with development and learning and use this knowledge to provide meaningful and challenging learning experiences for individuals with exceptionalities.
