Administered by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development. Students are nominated by their school based on academic performance and qualities of leadership and service demonstrated in their school and community.
Open to all grade 11 high school students. Traditionally presented by the Lieutenant Governor at special ceremonies around Nova Scotia. Awarded annually.

The Queen Elizabeth II Medal has three criteria for its recipient: has demonstrated a superior achievement in school studies in all three years of high school; has achieved an outstanding record in all aspects of school and community involvement; and is graduated having satisfied the requirements for a Nova Scotia High School Graduation Diploma.

Graduating student with the highest average, taken from all grade 11 and grade 12 course final marks.

Gold Medal Academic Distinction -
An average of 95% or higher
Silver Medal Academic Excellence -
An average between 90%-94.9%
Bronze Medal Academic Achievement -
An average between 80% - 89.9%

Averages will be calculated using all courses the student was enrolled in for the current year using a straight average
There is no minimum number of courses to be enrolled in to qualify for the mark distinctions
There are three categories of recognition: Gold, Silver and Bronze
