Welcome teachers, students and families. My name is Shannon Davis and I am the School Counsellor here at Drumlin Heights Consolidated School.
My passion for school counselling began as a Yarmouth area adult educator, helping to motivate and support at-risk youth and adults with their basic literacy goals, aspirations to finish high school academics and obtain their Nova Scotia high school diploma, or to write their GED certificate. Watching the majority of my students progress to better employment opportunities, or enroll in post-secondary options for their future was always a joy for me.
My background has always been rooted in education! As a life-long learner, I hold a Bachelor of Public Relations, Bachelor of Education & Masters of Education in Counselling from Acadia University. I am currently working on a Master of Education in Technology from Mount Saint Vincent University.
I am nationally certified with the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association, and I hold a Registered Counselling Therapist license with the Nova Scotia College of Counselling Therapists.
As your school counsellor, I endeavor to be a 21st century teacher, learner and leader. Proactively providing a comprehensive guidance and counselling model within Drumlin Heights that offers preventative and responsive activities to meet the needs of all students that I serve.
Your school counsellor aims to provide students with effective, timely, safe, evidence-based, and confidential short-term supports through brief, change-oriented psychotherapy.
During the first appointment, the counsellor will ask questions to understand students’ concerns, provide support, and develop a plan to address identified concerns. This initial appointment will last 45-60 minutes.
Many students find that one appointment is all they need to get back on track, and others may benefit from a few follow-up appointments. Students will work collaboratively with the counsellor to determine which model best meets their needs. Students looking for long-term counselling will be directed to a range of supports that are available in the community.
