On Wednesday, September 25, our Year 4 students embarked on an experiment that aimed to demonstrate the impact of mining on the Earth's surface. Each student was given a unique cookie containing M&M’s,, dried cranberries, and chocolate chips, along with a toothpick. Their mission? To "mine" the cookie and extract all the "minerals" without causing harm. This hands-on activity helped them realize the consequences of mining materials from the Earth.
Sinar from 4A expressed his learning, stating, "I learned that some people are taking materials from the Earth and it is destroying the land." The students thoroughly enjoyed this engaging learning experience. In our upcoming investigations, students will explore how their choices affect the environment and what actions they can take to make a positive impact.
On Monday, September 23, 2024, Year 4 watched a movie called The Lorax, based on a book written by Dr. Seuss. The movie is about a boy named Ted who lives in a plastic city called Thneedville. He likes a girl named Audrey, who wants to see a real tree. Ted decides to make finding a real tree his goal. His grandma tells him he needs to talk to the Once-ler, who lives outside the town.
The Once-ler tells Ted that he once went to a land full of trees and started chopping them down to make a product people wanted. As demand grew, he and his family cut down all the trees until none were left. However, the Once-ler saved one last seed, which he gives to Ted. The current multi-millionaire, O'Hare, opposes planting the tree because it would hurt his business. After some convincing, Ted and Audrey plant the tree, and the Once-ler feels proud.
This movie has a strong moral message with important lessons. One thing the Lorax should have told the Once-ler is: "Reuse resources, especially natural ones."
Have you watched the movie? If not, I highly recommend it. Thank you!
