As we begin our ‘Who We Are’ unit of inquiry into ’People’s relationships with others contribute to their well-being’ the Year 1 students have engaged in a number of interactive experiences to further understand the line of inquiry regarding safe, healthy and supportive environments.
Our initial investigation focused on the theme of Safe Environments. During Safety Week, students engaged in learning about the significance of safety, identifying the individuals in their lives who help maintain their safety, and understanding safe versus unsafe behaviours. They also learned how to conduct a 20-second safety scan.
As part of this learning experience, the students took on the role of risk assessors by exploring various areas of the school environment. The process involved three key steps:
20-Second Scan: Students performed a quick assessment to identify any potential hazards.
Discussion of Behaviors: They engaged in discussions about what constitutes safe and unsafe behaviours in the identified areas.
Demonstration of Safe Behaviors: Finally, students had the opportunity to practice and demonstrate safe behaviours within those environments. Demonstration of Safe Behaviors: Finally, students had the opportunity to practice and demonstrate safe behaviours within those environments.
This investigation provided students with valuable insights into safety practices and helped them develop critical thinking skills regarding their surroundings.

During Healthy Week, students explored the concept of health and discovered various ways to maintain a healthy lifestyle. They reviewed the principles of a balanced diet and identified healthy habits.
In our second investigation, Year 1 students were encouraged to become "risk-takers" by trying new healthy foods. They utilized their senses—taste, sight, touch, and smell—to describe a diverse range of fruits and vegetables. This hands-on experience not only enhanced their descriptive vocabulary but also deepened their understanding of the importance of making healthy choices.
This investigation aimed to foster a positive attitude towards healthy eating and empower students to make informed dietary
