Friday 24th September 2021 was an important day for secondary school students, especially for year 12. Because this was the day where we provided an orientation event to prepare students for success in blended learning, for some of the year 12 students, this event was the first time for them to come to spend time in our beloved school.
Below are the objectives of the year 12 orientation day:
To build community
To provide information/familiarization with the campus.
To connect/reconnect students with their peers, their teachers, and their support network.
To share processing of HBL and covid experience.
To help to make this day a success, students worked with a range of different adults in the school building:
Advisory teacher: discussion-based relationship building, school tour; including practicalities such as visiting the uniform shop and looking at how the school has changed or how the school has been made covid secure. Drop into classrooms - meet teachers.
Head of Year: provide games/team building activities that act as icebreakers and help students
Counselor: facilitate discussions in the style of group counseling - address concerns about returning to campus and support a shared problem-solving approach. Advisory class reflection on the HBL experiences; growth, surprises, struggles - ensure that all voices are heard.to feel connected
There were three games/team building activities for year 12:
What song is it? Students were divided into 3 or 4 groups; each group was provided with post-it paper and a colored marker. There were four different A3 papers put on the corner of Plaza B, with each A3 paper showing lyrics from a song. Using the post-it paper, each group had to arrange the lyrics in the correct order and guess who the band/singer is and what the song title is. Every group has 5 minutes to look at each poster, discuss the answer with their group members. After 5 minutes, the group had to switch to another poster (move clockwise)
Hula hoop rock paper scissors. We divided the class into 2 groups, with each group standing (using health protocol) behind the end of the hoop. The purpose of this game is to be the first to go to the other group’s end, in order for them to walk each hoop they need to do rock paper scissors first.
Pass the movement challenge. Students are divided into two big groups, and they will stand in line (with social distancing). The instructor will give a picture to the person standing at the last of the line, they have to pass the message only with movement. No sound is allowed! The person sitting in front of the line has to guess what is the movement.
