Reception’s First UOI: How We Organize Ourselves
The first ten weeks of the 2021-2022 academic year had the Reception students learning about how organizing ourselves impacts our well-being.
“David Goes to School” and “Yes, David” Activities
Students started the unit with a provocation story from “David Goes To School” by David Shannon. They learned to recognize the expected behaviors at school and continued with another series of David Shannon’s “No David” to talk about their home rules.
We also talked about how well-organized spaces affect us and make our life more balanced. Students learned how being a responsible member of their class and home helps them become better-contributing members of their wider community.

We practiced following rules not just at school or at home but in other places we visit. We thought about the causes and effects of when we do not follow safety rules.

We also learned to make good choices by engaging in our Civics activities, where we discussed the importance of hygiene practices and maintaining a healthy lifestyle.

We integrated the skills we learned through the hand washing hands experiment (Go Away Germs) in Science and during fun songs learned in Music lessons Stay safe song (Covid related).
We practiced self-management, critical thinking, research skills, and communication skills while creating our Favorite Place 3D Model Project, starting with the planning, the preparation, and the presentation in our Seesaw Class. We reflected on our work and discussed how we could improve it, what we liked best about our chosen place, and how we could overcome the challenges we faced while building it.

As a culmination activity for our unit, we joined the “Reception Got Talent” assembly, where we prepared an act at home. We practiced what we had learned in this unit. We showed everyone how good we are at organizing ourselves, specifically our fine and gross motor skills, spatial awareness, time management, and safe, healthy, informed choices.
