Show and Tell
Kindergarten students were given the opportunity to develop their communication skills and confidence this month through Show and Tell. Each term, the Show and Tell focus coincides with our Unit of Inquiry. Students shared baby photos, pictures of family members and explained what they like to do with their families. During this activity, the students practiced their listening, speaking, self-management, and social skills.
Students were excited to share information about themselves with their peers, and teachers enjoyed seeing the positive interactions generated during this morning routine. Students made connections to what their friends were sharing, and the presenter responded with enthusiasm.
These positive interactions will be a good indicator of student readiness during our end-of-term celebration performance.
English
In English, Kindergarten students learn about identifying letters and exploring their sounds to prepare them to be readers. Students learned about the form and function of the letters S, A, T, I, P, N by exploring how the letter looks, sounds, and is written. During literacy-focused learning times with Ibu Ashley, students practice their ATLs by inquiring about the letter of the week, sharing words they know, listening and looking at pictures of words to sort sounds, make predictions before reading, and listen to a story and ask and answer questions before, during, and after reading. Students enjoy singing a letter of the week song each week and learn an action to remember the letter sound. They reflect on letter formation activities they completed from Seesaw to establish success criteria and practice writing Capital and Lowercase letters. These kinesthetic and fine-motor activities help with students’ cognition.
Each week, one of the most exciting and anticipated activities is the Guess the Letter game, where students have to guess what letter of the week’s beginning sound object is being drawn. Students also enjoy finding hidden letters in pictures and videos to reinforce their knowledge of the form of the letter. Learning these sounds through these engagements has prepared students to form and read short words using the first letter set letters and sounds.
Each week with Ibu Ashley, students are given time to reflect on their learning and reinforce ATL skills and Learner Profile attributes through reflective thinking routines. Our young learners are proving to be caring, thoughtful, and principled risk-takers!
