On Friday, 29th November 2024, the Blackbox Theatre came alive with an extraordinary showcase of talent and creativity, as Year 10 and Year 11 theatre students took to the stage to present the fruits of their learning. This exclusive lunchtime performance, open to teachers and Year 9-11 students, left the audience captivated and inspired.
The event began with the Year 10 Theatre students’ Epic Theatre performance. Drawing on the principles of Brechtian theatre, these students demonstrated their ability to provoke thought and engage the audience in a critical examination of societal issues. The students raised stories from the 1998 tragedy and highlighted the relationship between indigenous (Indonesian) colonizers, ethnic Chinese and also raised the Kamisan action as a form of student support for the Kamisan action which is still ongoing to this day.
The story Following this, the Year 11 Theatre students presented a powerful Solo Theatre Piece inspired by Antonin Artaud's Theatre of Cruelty. Shade’s performance theme is betrayal through sexual assault and the intention of her performance is to force the hard and difficult truths about experiences of sexual assault onto the audience through disturbing imagery and raw physicality.
The Blackbox Show not only celebrated the students’ hard work and dedication but also showcased the impact of theatre as a medium for storytelling and self-expression. This intimate and immersive setting offered the perfect platform for the students to shine, creating an unforgettable experience for all who attended.
A huge congratulations to the Year 10 students (Aleeya, Alex, Angela, Kiyan, Maliha, Nana, and Olivia) and Year 11 theatre student (Shahde) for their outstanding performances and to the teachers who guided them through this artistic journey.
See you in the next Blackbox Show!
