On Monday, 4 November 2024, We did a bartering activity for our provocation for the Unit of Inquiry, “How We Organize Ourselves”. This unit is primarily about how money functions in society, how to use money responsibly, the history of money, and how businesses can operate. We felt that it would be a good idea for kids to bring something they valued into school, consider its actual value, and trade it for another item that their peers had. Students were then able to experience how it is to be a part of a financial ecosystem or micro-economy.
At the beginning of the activity, we observed our peers’ items and tried to assess the value of them. We then went around to each of them and tried to negotiate a deal. We had to use our communication skills in order to persuade them that the deal was good. We also had to be open-minded and understand our friends when they didn’t want to make a deal.
At the end of the activity, we needed to reflect and answer some questions that were provided. For example: What is the new stuff we had after the swap? Why did we successfully exchange the stuff, and why did we not?
Terima kasih sangat Museum Bank Indonesia!
On Wednesday, 13 November 2024, guest speaker Bapak Tjen Mulyadi Haryanto (father of Mike, class 3B) came to Year 3 and gave a lesson about money. We discussed and listened to his explanation about the Value of Money. He discussed the history of money from the barter era to the emergence of coins and paper money. Apart from that, he also discussed the names of currencies in several countries, the meaning of cheap and expensive prices, and the monetary value of one item compared to others. We showed our enthusiasm because he held an interactive discussion with question-and-answer activities. If we could answer his questions, Mr. Tjen gave us play money in the form of silver or gold coins and gold bullion or silver bullion toys, each of which had a particular value.
This activity made students good communicators as they provided answers and listened to his explanations. Apart from that, they became knowledgeable students about how money functions. Thank you very much, Bapak Tjen Mulyadi!
Terima kasih sangat, Ibu Pauline!
On December 5th, 2024, our class embarked on a field trip to the Hypermart, Karawaci, in order to explore a business, learn about various goods and services, and practice using our money responsibly. We were also joined by several class parents! Mike from 3Bs parents kindly offered to give us a tour and tell us all about how a grocery store works and explain some of the different pricing. After the tour, the students broke out into smaller groups with a gift voucher of 100,000 rupiah. Students then had to buy what they felt they wanted from a shopping list that was previously provided to them. They practiced math skills they learned in class like rounding (to the nearest rupiah in the thousands place) and subtracting the items from their budget so they could use their gift card to its fullest potential.
We felt that this was a truly memorable and enriching learning engagement for the students. Along with practicing their math skills, they also learned about the value of money, the importance of proper money management, how sales promotion works, and how a successful business can function. We thought they might also greatly appreciate the effort their parents put into grocery shopping! A huge thank you to Mike’s parents and to the class parents for donating their time and effort to this learning experience.
