Year 5 went on a Year 5 Action Camp on Wednesday-Friday, May 21-23, 2025. The goal of this camp are to further develop the students’ understanding of what action is in PYP, contributing as individuals and as a group to benefit the environment and communities, taking action that support local and environmental change, support the development of student agency, ATL skills, and Learner Profile Attributes, and encourage self-reliance and independence in our students. We departed from Jakarta using the Whoosh, a fast train capable of reaching Bandung in only half an hour.
After we arrived at Bandung, we immediately headed to SDN Gudang Kahuripan 01, a local school located in Lembang, on the suburb of Bandung. After the welcoming ceremony, the Year 5 students immediately went into action. The students were divided into several groups that would lead a group of students from the local school to do hands-on activities with the focus of learning English. The Year 5 students were risk takers and communicators when they facilitated the sessions. After that, the Year 5 students planted some plants around SDN Gudang Kahuripan in an effort to make the school environment more comfortable and healthy.
We had quite a hectic schedule on day 2 of our Year 5 Action Camp. We started the day by visiting the Saung Angklung Udjo. Saung Angklung Udjo has a goal of preserving the Sundanese culture, especially music, through Angklung and Golek puppetry. In this place, the Year 5 students learned how to assemble Angklung. After that, we watched a Golek puppet and Angklung performance. Then we headed to Kartika Sari to buy some oleh-oleh for our loved ones. Then we headed to Nuart Museum, a museum founded by Nyoman Nuarta, one of the premier artists here in Indonesia. This museum hosted all of Nyoman Nuarta’s lifelong work. After we visited the museum, the Year 5 students joined a sculpting workshop where they learned how to make an artwork from clay. Students pour out their creativity as they try to turn their vision into reality using the clay provided.
Although not as busy as day 2, we still had some activities on the third day of the Year 5 Action Camp. On this day, we participated in a workshop run by Ecoenzym. In this workshop, students learned how to turn their household waste into fertilizer. By turning household waste into fertilizer, we can reduce the amount of waste each household produces. After we finished the workshop, it’s time for us to head back to Bintaro
