On Friday, May 16, 2025, the class parents organized for art teacher Ibu Indri to come to school and teach the students different pottery techniques and how to mold clay into different shapes. This was done for our sixth and final unit, “How We Express Ourselves”. For this unit, students have learned various art forms, types of poetry, literary devices, and how to express themselves intelligently through art. The students are encouraged to do art pieces that are important to them and to use things like symbolism in order to do so. This exercise was a very welcome experience in that it taught students how to do a unique and often overlooked form of art. The students got incredibly creative and formed some really impressive pieces for their art portfolio that will be a part of their cumulative assessment for this unit.
In this unit, we created an art portfolio, followed by an art exhibition as a cumulative assessment. Students began the unit with a provocation of different art forms and learned how they were connected to culture. In UOI, we had some direct instruction on the meaning of different paintings throughout history, and we discussed the deeper meaning of each of them. We also looked at song lyrics that the students brought in and discussed what the artists’ intended meanings were. In English, we looked at different styles of poetry and different literary devices that can help poetry become more interesting and impactful. We also looked at narrative storytelling and taught them the proper way to include dialogue in their stories.
So, for our cumulative assessment, students were to include art pieces with an explanation of the deeper meaning or symbolism they incorporated. They had to write their own poetry and try to include some of the literary devices we learned, as well as experiment with different poetic styles. Then, they had to write a narrative story that included some dialogue. This was to form their art portfolio! Then, during the second-to-last week of school on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, we had an art exhibition in which the students showcased their art pieces and discussed the deeper meaning that they intended. It was a huge success!
