Vice Presidential Elections - Class of 2027
Altasena Soejono - PIC
The GJS Student Council has a unique system in deciding the presidents. Aiming to promote an equal student voice, the presidents are comprised of a male and female duo from the current batch of Year 10s. The winners are decided through a student poll and they would resume their role as vice presidents before eventually taking the role of presidents in year 12. Since 2023, the student council has made the transition from online Vice-Presidential elections to offline Vice-Presidential elections. Taking place over 2 weeks, this process would determine the leader of our organisation for the coming 2 years. Given the magnitude of the responsibility the elected pair would hold, the StuCo VP Election committee hosted multiple avenues for the two pairs; Theodore and Vienna (#1), and Aqila and Alema (#2)
Both candidates were given the chance to promote themselves online on their separate Instagram accounts, each candidate did great in promoting themselves, their ideals and their promises as candidates! Their campaigning culminated in a video for each candidate. Additionally, candidates also had a respective day to take over the GJS council Instagram account. Here, the GJS School community had the chance to ask the candidates questions. They asked questions ranging from favorite food, to campaign-specific questions.
Campaign week culminated in the Debate on the tenth of December. Here, 2 Year 11 Executives, myself and vice-president Seongyun moderated a debate between the candidates during an assembly. The debate worked by a presented prompt that came from either the student council or a member of leadership. Then, candidates offered a response with the opposing candidate offering a rebuttal. The order of candidates alternated with every prompt. All members of each candidate team offered an insightful response to the prompts. After the debate finished, a QR code was shown where all secondary students could vote for their chosen candidate. We trust that all students were able to use all campaign week activities to individually assess their chosen candidates. After a 3-day period for vote tallying, the majority vote was for Candidate No.1, Theodore Nauli Joshua Manurung and Ida Ayu Vienna Yandhana.
A massive round of applause for the winning pair! The entire Global Jaya Student Council team is excited to work with you and all students are proud to have you represent our voices.
Warm greetings to all,
First, on behalf of the Secondary Student Council, I wish everyone a Happy New Year and a warm welcome back to school! Back in November 2024, to close the range of fruitful events we coordinated, our last order of business was to recruit new members. Members who applied and were selected would help manage upcoming events in 2025 as valued members of StuCo. They would gain opportunities to exercise their time management skills, social skills, and leadership skills (to mention some) and be able to ask for advice from year levels above them.
Leading up to the date of open recruitments, preparations were happening behind the scenes. Tuesday, 19th of November, was when most brainstorming juices flowed. There was a unanimous decision to hold recruitments offline. We could host recruitments offline and decided to take advantage of that. Aligning with our plan to have individual and group case studies, the benefits of offline recruitment significantly outweighed online recruitment. We could better understand the candidates' personalities and gauge their ability to work with other students, regardless of year level. Feeling satisfied with our planning, we proceeded to execute the plan.
Designers, secretaries, and department heads created posters, Google forms, and announcements. The Year 11 execs had a hand in creating the interview questions and case studies as they were interviewing and evaluating the candidates. As we planned for offline interviews, emails were sent to teachers asking permission to occupy their rooms on the 3rd of December. We would like to extend a massive hand of gratitude to Pak Irwan, Ibu Vira, Pak Arief, Ibu Nia, Ibu Krisna, Pak Sanjay, and Ibu Lily, who made this possible.
On December 3rd, offline recruitments ran smoothly after school from 3:00 until 4:30. While we ran into problems such as candidates being tardy or case studies taking longer than anticipated, it did not significantly impact the time. The candidates were split into two groups. While one group did individual interviews in their assigned room, the other group was divided into two groups working on different case studies. After half an hour, the two groups switched; the candidates who had already completed individual interviews were now working on case studies, and the case study group was being interviewed.
A few days after the completion of offline recruitments, Year 11 execs evaluated the candidates, weighing in thoughts from the interviewer and comments from case study observers. While opinions were sometimes contradictory, 15 candidates were selected as new members of our Student Council. Emails were constructed and scheduled to be sent at 8:00 on Monday, 9th of December. Thank you to all the students who applied to take risks and initiative. Congratulations to the 15; we look forward to seeing the great things you will accomplish. We hope the members of our community continue to look forward to our events ahead; until next time!

The Student Council Camp is a yearly tradition that brings together Junior and Executive (Year 11) members of the Student Council for a weekend of bonding, teamwork, and fun. In this camp, members engaged in teamwork-building activities and slept over at the school. The aim of Student Council Camp is to allow members to establish new relationships and become more comfortable with one another, especially those between different grades. By fostering strong connections, we hope teamwork and communication become more efficient and smooth in future Student Council events. Aside from the team bonding, it was also a great opportunity for members to make new friends and create unforgettable memories. This year’s Student Council Camp occurred from Friday, January 31st, to Saturday, February 1st, 2025.
The camp officially began at 3:30 PM, with Junior members being formally introduced to the Executives and briefed on upcoming Student Council events. After the opening session, all members headed to the Football Field to kick off the outdoor activities. The first game, “Capture the Flag,” saw the whole Student Council split into two teams for a friendly yet competitive match. Despite the competitive spirit, the game fostered a strong sense of camaraderie, with both teams sharing playful moments. The next outdoor activity was “Cross the Lava,” where teams of ten had to strategize on transporting all their members across a designated area using only nine “stones”—represented by cardboard pieces—without losing any. The outdoor activities wrapped up with a water balloon fight where students could let loose and have fun with all members. The outdoor activities were a great start and ice-breaker for the camp
After shower time and dinner, members gathered together for Bonding Time. The first game was Mafia, which allowed the members to get comfortable and friendly with each other. It is a game that requires a lot of collaboration and communication but allows some really funny moments to shine through. Next, the members were split into four groups and played “Minefield,” a challenge where one blindfolded member had to navigate through an obstacle course using only verbal guidance from their teammates, requiring trust and communication from members. Lastly, the members attempted to create a “Human Chair,” which is when members form a close circle and sit on the thighs of the person behind them, creating a chain of support where everyone holds each other without external support.
At 9 PM, a bonfire was started where members gathered to roast marshmallows, grill sausages, and make s’mores. The night ended with all members singing songs and eating together, simply enjoying our time until 10 PM when the Junior members were sent to sleep.
However, that was not the end of the activities for Student Council Camp, as the Executives had planned a surprise initiation for the Junior Members. At 3 AM, the Junior members were woken up by the Executives dressed as guards from the popular Korean Netflix show “Squid Game.” To become “official” Student Council members, the Junior Members had to go through a series of clues and challenges to find the passcode and unlock a sealed box. They had to use their logic and thinking skills to work out the locations they needed to go to based on the clues given and had to complete challenges such as “Ddakji” and “Jegi” as a group. The end of the Scavenger Hunt involved a group-wide game of “Red Light, Green Light,” after which they received the numbers to unlock the box. Inside the box was a Student Council flag, which everyone decorated with handprints (using paint)—signifying their official status as a Student Council member.
The following morning, the students packed up, enjoyed breakfast, and took final pictures together, closing this year’s Student Council Camp. We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude and thanks to all teachers who approved and supervised the event, the staff who assisted with preparations and cleanup, and our fellow Student Council Executives whose contribution made this event an overall success. This year’s Student Council Camp was truly a memorable one, and we hope everyone had an enjoyable and fulfilling time!
