Recently, our year 11 Economics classes didn an anti- smoking campaign supervised by Ibu Shweta. After learning about demerit goods and negative externalities, we thought of campaigning against cigarettes. The students divided themselves into seven groups to tackle this task, and produced a variety of works including posters, brochures, videos and even rap performances.
I had the pleasure of working with the rap performance group, and we were able to perform in Plaza A for the school community. Our rap highlighted the harmful effects of smoking on not only the smoker, but also the people around them and the environment. We also encouraged our peers to choose a healthy lifestyle and to stay away from cigaretters. This rap was performed during lunchtime on the 27th of January with our writer and rapper Raza singing for the whole school.
Through this project, I learned a lot about the dangers of smoking and its negative externality upon the larger society. I was amazed by the statistics and facts that I discovered, such as the harm caused by second-hand smoke and the cost it imposes on our healthcare system (did you know that more than a quarter of a million Indonesians will succumb to smoking-related illnesses every year?)
The other groups did a fantastic job as well, with creative posters, informative brochures and engaging videos that caught the attention of the peers. I know that the brochures group included an interactive cross-word puzzle that if the students got correct could earn them house points, which is a clever way of engaging our student body through some friendly competition.
This project highlights the importance of educating young people about the consequences of smoking and the impact it has on others. The students in the Year 11 Economics class have shown that they are able to spread awareness about important issues we all face today. All of the groups have done outstanding work on this project and deserves all the praise they get!
