On the 20th until the 21st of January the Student Council revived an event called Student Council camp. This was the first time we have done this since 2019 due to the pandemic. In this camp the main goal was for the whole student council to bond with each other before we start creating huge events. This year the year 11s were organizing the camp as the year 12s were really busy and we did not want to burden them with the responsibility of creating and organizing the camp itself. This camp was held at school, specifically in the gym area.
The presidents began by explaining about future events that we will be holding. After this, we played an icebreaker game, which was a Kahoot quiz.. There were questions about the student council and also some questions about pop culture. In this kahoot, the student council members get to know the executive team better and also have a larger understanding about the student council itself.
After the ice breaking activity we then completed a lot of outdoor activities. One of the games that the whole student council enjoyed was capture the flag, as the students were split into teams and had to play against each other.
After completing the outdoor activities it was already 6:30pm and it was time to shower and get ready for dinner. While everyone else was showering, some of the year 11s started to get ready to organize dinner and also started grilling the sausages and burning the marshmallows. After dinner it was time to get ready for bed, or what the MYP student council members thought was bedtime.
While the MYP students were sleeping (or were about to fall asleep) the year 11s started their mischievous plan. They started to plot a treasure hunt around the school that would need to be completed by us at 2am. At 2am, the year 11s and also year 12s started to wake the MYP student council members up by banging on the doors and also playing a really loud purge alarm. All the MYP students were confused as they were suddenly woken up without any explanation. They were then asked to line up with their groups and that was when the treasure hunt started. The year 11 students led the MYP students around the school and set activities for the students to solve in order for them to move to the next location.
After arriving at the last location the presidents surprised all the MYP students by telling them to close their eyes and tell them to trust them. They were all led to the middle of the soccer field and were asked to recite an oath. After that everyone went to bed until we all woke up at 7:30 am. In the morning we then gathered for breakfast and heard speeches from the year 12s and also from our new presidents and vice presidents.
It was overall a fun experience as it was the first time that any of us slept over at school. It was also really fun as we became so much closer than we were before. This whole camp was able to break the intimidating feeling that the MYP had for the year 11s and made us much closer. A huge thank you to the teacher who was supervising and also to all of the year 11 student council members for organizing. It was overall a successful event and I hope the whole student council had a fun time and made this camp a long lasting memory.Â
