This term in Year 9 Product Design our students have learned about design constraints. Design constraint is a powerful tool that can help designers to create an innovative solution by limiting the available resources or the design options that can be utilised. One example of the process involved the creation of paper shoes. The students worked in groups to create functional paper shoes by using ONLY paper, glue and tape.
The first step in creating paper shoes the students were researching about different design of paper shoes as the references. After that the students constructed the shoes using the limited resources. The last part was to evaluate the shoes structure by wearing the shoes. Based on the result of the evaluation the students were using the data to make improvements of the product for future reference.
Overall, the creation of paper shoes is an excellent example of the application of design constraints. By limiting the materials and design options, the students are challenged to create something unique and innovative.
