Bus Stop Activity: Human Impact
For the last six weeks, the Year 1 students have learned that animals depend on the environment for survival. During the unit exploration, they listened to a number of guest speakers who shared about different animals and their survival, such as the orangutans from BOSF, the corals and ocean animals from YTR, and the primates from IAR. At the end of our unit, students were being reflective when discussing how humans' actions could impact animals’ survival as we share the planet together with them.
During the bus stop activity, students collaborated with partners to analyze and evaluate issues and ideas when observing pictures of the human impact on the animal’s survival. This enabled them to practice their communication skills and thinking skills during their discussion on how human actions can have positive or negative effects on animals. They also identified what they saw in the picture and whether they thought it was a positive or negative human action.
How about you? What have you done to help the animals? Do you take care of any pet animals? Let’s take care of the animals!
Animal Warrior Pledge
Continuing their exploration of the human impacts on animal survival, the Year 1 students showed the IB Learner Profile Attribute of caring by making a pledge to carry out a simple thing they can do to help their chosen animal. After discussing the positive and negative human actions on the animal survival, students created an animal handprint and wrote the pledge about their chosen animal. First, students made a handprint and then creatively drew their chosen animal from their handprint. Next, they demonstrated their knowledge when thinking about and writing their pledge to help the animal after identifying how humans hurt their animals. Their pledges are simple actions such as bringing reusable bags when shopping, turning off the lights when they don’t use them, planting a seed, walking more than using the vehicles, and even cleaning the beach when they visit the beach. Students understand the importance of their actions and their responsibility to take care of their environment.
