Chinese New Year Celebration
Chinese New Year also known as the Spring Festival, New Year festivities usher out the old year and are meant to bring luck and prosperity in the new one. One of the most famous greetings for Chinese is the cantonese “Kung hei fat choi” , literally meaning “Greetings and become rich”. This year is the Year of the Tiger according to the Chinese Zodiac. Global Jaya celebrated the Chinese New Year online on Wednesday, Feb 2, 2022, where some of Year 8 students performed in the celebration.
Year 8 Social Connection on Monday, November 29th, 2021.
The social connection activity was created to support relationship building in Global Jaya. All students including year 8 participated in this event. To join this event, of course, the first thing they have to follow is a strict health protocol. Because our school implemented odd and even weeks where the student can not come to school due to the restrictions of the number of the students in the school so the activity was divided into two parts, including an offline and online version.
Those who are scheduled at the school were involved in offline games called Treasure Hunt. They worked as a team to solve the picture clue. Once they figured out where the picture was taken, the group had to go to that location. Arriving at that particular location, there was a poster that contained a QR code and a learner profile attribute. The function of that QR code was to be scanned and to see the next clue. Before they go to the next location, they would take a picture representing the learning profile attribute. The pictures above are examples of how they got the location correct and took a picture based on the learning attribute they got. For those students who were at home, they joined the social connection via Zoom meeting with fun online activities.
Year 8 Term 3 Advisory: Bystander to upstander:
This term’s unit for the year 8 advisory class has a very important topic which is about bullying. The unit will be run until the end of term 3, 2022. At the beginning of this unit, they discussed in the class their definitions of a Hero. Finally, we end up with, a hero is someone who wants to stand up for the rights of others even in a small way. Even standing up for others in a small way can make a big difference as it can mean something significant to the other person.
The unit focuses on how students can be an upstander. Every morning the year 8 students discuss the significance of bullying and how important it is to stand up for the victim. They shared their personal opinion about some of the negative impacts of bullying. There are so many things we discussed and will discuss further in the unit such as: being a bystander, being a whistleblower, cyberbullying, and our GJS Peer on Peer abuse policy.
