With no DP Exams in May, Year 12 students were facing a lot of downtime between the end of classes in April and graduation in June. In our ongoing efforts to provide an education that goes beyond the subjects we teach, Year 12 teachers, Advisors, members of leadership, GJS alumni, parents and members of the GJS staff designed a three-week course to guide students in life beyond Global Jaya. Each of these three weeks has a distinct theme and is divided into four daily sessions of 45 minutes each.
The first week, Independent Living (April 19-23), kicked the event off with sessions about general independence, nutrition, cooking, fitness and wellness, finances, first aid, cleaning, the arts, and stories from staff and alumni about our successes and failures in our first experiences with independence. So far, early feedback from students indicates that the week was a great success. As with anything we do, we recognize there is room for improvement and we have already started thinking about how to make it even better next year.
This week, students are involved in a variety of sessions and activities related to university life at home or abroad. Wellness beyond high school is the theme for next week’s sessions. Regardless of the topics, it has been a wonderful experience for students and staff alike. Once again, I have been reminded of how fortunate I am to be a part of this community of learners and teachers.
As I alluded to above, we plan to make this an annual event for our graduating Seniors. The vast majority of students who responded to our week 1 feedback survey said that they would be willing to return next year as alumni representatives or session leaders. I am not surprised. We put tremendous effort into building community at GJS and our students are both the backbone and product of that effort. We will continue to support them, just as they continue to support us, as they transition from our community to their next community, wherever that might be.
