In Term 3, Year 3 students celebrated their learning about Energy for the How The World Works unit by presenting a class Culmination Project Presentation. In their presentations, they became scientists, chose an experiment, and explained their experiment using the scientific method. They needed to follow the steps in the scientific method: title, aim, questions, hypothesis, materials needed, steps of the experiment, results and conclusion. They also explained the energy transformation that happened in their experiment. In this activity, students practised improving their research skills and communication skills. After they completed this task, they needed to reflect on their presentation to think about their strengths and what to improve on in the future.
On Friday, March 5th 2021, Year 3 had an assembly event. In this assembly, teachers chose two representative students to explain the Culmination Project Presentation at their year level. The experiment presentation was a good chance for other students to learn about the experiments. Three students performed a song, and some played the piano. The assembly was a good time for students to improve their communication skills, listening, speaking and showing respectful appreciation for their classmates' performances. During the assembly, teachers gave a Global Award to three students in each class based on the Learner Profiles, focusing on learning in this unit. All students showed their enthusiasm for this event.
During our HBL time, we provide Social-Emotional Learning weekly. These activities help maintain students' emotions and well-being during the pandemic. We also try to give an activity to decrease screentime to reduce any and support students eye care. In week 9, Term 3, we learned about Mindfulness through drawing. Students were asked to draw an abstract picture using their hands and focus on their hand movements, slowly following and feeling the movements in the same direction or different direction. They also could draw shapes or different kinds of lines (curve, zigzag, wavy, etc.). They could decorate and colour their drawing after doing the movements with their two hands. After completing this activity, many students said that they felt more relaxed and calm.
On March 18th and 19th, 2021, all of the Global Jaya community celebrated students' learning achievements through our Term 3 Mid Semester Conference (MSC) event. It was our second time conducting this event virtually.
Our MSC’s allow us the opportunity to deliver positive and encouraging messages to both students and parents. Teachers, students and parents work collaboratively to ensure that students reach their learning goals, even during a pandemic. We proudly presented students’ progress and celebrated their success together.
We thank the parents for their support and encourage them to write reflections based on these meetings. These parent reflections mean a lot to students and teachers alike. We hope that our hard work as educators brings happiness to students and parents and ensures that students are ready to move to the next year level.
Have you ever felt so happy because your dream came true? Yes, all the Year 3 students and teachers felt this way when we had a wonderful virtual field trip to Washington D.C.
The field trip was held on Wednesday, March 31st 2021, for 1.5 hours. It was a virtual tour with interactive tour experiences to Washington D.C. The United Operators Indonesia organised this event. It was a way out to keep students engaged and have a perfectly safe field trip to a historically significant city. Teachers, students, parents, and Primary Principals worked collaboratively to organise this event. We used Zoom to run the event.
We Integrated this trip with our current Unit of Inquiry under the transdisciplinary theme of Where We Are in Place and Time. All the Year 3 participants visited several iconic and fascinating places in Washington DC. In addition, we integrated the session using a virtual Google map. Shortly after we arrived at the airport, we went to Union Station. It is the central train station in Washington DC. Then we visited Capitol Hill. It is the seat of power in the US government. We explored the inside of this famous building.
We also explored the NASA Museum. NASA stands for National Aeronautics and Space Administration Museum. All students were amazed by what they saw and became more knowledgeable of the important history of NASA. We learned the history of various technologies, transportations and NASA’s roles in exploration. Moreover, we also went to the Africa American Museum, Native American Museum, Lincoln Memorial, Washington Tower, White House and the Washington Zoo.
We had a great time and learned a lot from this virtual field trip. All students were engaged and demonstrated enthusiasm for everything they saw and learned.
