History Club Week 1

Foundation Stones Week 1: Starting Your project

23rd February 2021

In today's session, we discussed what the Foundation Stones Project involves. For next week, we would like you to do a little bit of research before you start designing your stone. As this is such as sensitive topic, please ONLY use the websites we have suggested. Links to each website can be found by clicking the button on the left.

You should also start looking for your stone. Maybe collect one on a walk in the park or on the beach. The stone should be big enough to fit in the palm of your hand.

As you do your research, think about what you want to say on your stone and note down any ideas you have as we will be using them in the coming weeks.

Write your own historical fiction competition

This competition wants you to write your own historical story that included:

  • Historical accuracy – even down to the choice of names characters are given and any props additional to the historical setting

  • A riveting read with a good plot!

  • A convincing story - i.e. is it plausible that these events and/or this character could have existed at the time?

  • Use of historical knowledge to feed the plot, context and character

  • Effective use of historical vocabulary and literary conventions, including where dialogue is included in the story

  • Creative and interesting perspectives of story-telling. In the past we have received an entry telling the story of a siege from the perspective of the castle!

  • We recommend a minimum story length of 400 words.

Young historian award

This year the Historical Association in collaboration with the Spirit of Normandy Trust has organised a series of awards for outstanding history scholarship. Young people aged from 11-19 years are asked to investigate, analyse and write about history.
