During Registration, students planning on enrolling in language courses must take a written Foreign Language Placement examination administered by the various language departments. Placement exams are currently offered in Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Modern Greek, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish and are administered by the appropriate language department of Georgetown University. Turkish, Persian, Korean, Polish and Ukrainian are also available by appointment. Placement results indicate the appropriate level of study a student needs to pursue. Results will be communicated either through the language departments or through GHD.

Swahili: Students with no background in Swahili should register for INAF 104. All others should contact Professor Sylvia Onder (onders@georgetown.edu), Coordinator of Small Program Languages, for guidance in taking Swahili.
The following languages offer online language placement exams over the summer: Arabic, Chinese, French, Italian, Japanese, Korean, and Spanish. If you plan to take courses in these languages you should take the online placement exam before orientation. In these departments you do not need to take the in-person confirmation exam during orientation. This exam is for undergraduates who are testing out of the College's language requirement. If you do not plan to take courses in these languages, but do plan to take the language proficiency exam, you should still take the placement test. In most departments, you must demonstrate a certain level of language proficiency on the placement exam before being eligible to take the proficiency exam.
