Commencement

Application for Graduation:

If you want to graduate in May, which is the standard for GHD students, you must apply no later than February 1st. If you apply later, you may still be allowed to graduate, but your name will not appear in the Commencement Program book. If you want to graduate in August or December, you must apply to graduate no later than the first working day of that same month.

If you apply to graduate in August or December, you have until the last working day of that month to complete all of your degree requirements. 

If you apply to graduate in May, all degree requirements are due the Monday before Commencement, including submission of grades to the Registrar.

You must be enrolled in the semester/term in which you graduate. If you apply to graduate towards the end of a given semester/term, but do not complete your degree requirements that semester/term, you will be required to enroll in the next semester/term.

Commencement Weekend Timeline:

• Friday, May 15 (3:30 p.m. - 5 p.m., Copley Formal Lounge/Zoom): GHD Commencement Ceremony. This event will be offered in hybrid format, to allow family and friends who can't join us in DC to attend. 

• Friday, May 15 (6 p.m. - 7:30 p.m., Copley Formal Lounge): GHD Reception

• Saturday, May 16: SFS Commencement Ceremony. The ceremony begins at 7:30 p.m., and students will be expected to arrive on campus by 5:00 p.m..  Assuming favorable weather conditions, the ceremony will be held on Healy Lawn, with unlimited guest seating, and, in the case of rain, the ceremony will be held in McDonough Gymnasium, with limited ticketed guest seating.

GHD students will need to purchase or rent a cap and gown, as well as a hood with a white collar. This rental will come with a tassel, and GHD will provide a stole. You can find more information about how and when to purchase your regalia here. You are more than welcome to rent regalia from previous GHD students. Please have your regalia in hand by May 1.

Georgetown Legacy Account Access:

• You will always have access to your Georgetown email account. However, we do recommend setting up mail forwarding to a personal email address so you don't miss any important emails from our team!

• You will lose access to Canvas, so be sure to download any syllabi or files that you would like to retain access to prior to graduation.

• Alumni are allowed physical access to Lauinger Library after graduation (between 8:00 AM  and 10:00 PM).

  • Anyone on campus using the guest wifi should be able to access almost all of online databases and resources from the library website https://library.georgetown.edu/policies/entrance-use/entrance

  • A limited number of library database licenses allow alumni access even off-campus. You can find the list here https://library.georgetown.edu/alumni
