GU Language Courses and Language Scholarship

Some students need additional foreign language courses before taking the Proficiency examination. A language course may be taken as an optional additional class during the academic year. However, such courses must be taken for a grade, NOT audited or taken on a Pass/Fail basis, and do not count as credit toward the degree or GPA. The Graduate School provides scholarship money to cover the cost of a foreign language course at Georgetown (of any credit amount - this covers 3-credit standard classes and 6-credit intensive classes). This money is available to every GHD student enrolled in a language course numbered 350 and below. More information regarding language scholarships can be found here.

Note: In order to maintain your language scholarship, you must obtain a passing grade in the course. Receipt of a failing grade will result in the loss of your language scholarship for that class, meaning that you will be personally responsible for paying tuition for that class.

Please note that the language scholarship cannot be used after you have documented proficiency in a language so plan the timing of your proficiency test accordingly.

Some language departments will allow graduate students to register online in GU Experience. Others require students to use paper add/drop forms. You should consult with the language department in which you plan to take classes to determine their registration policy.  The French department asks students to complete this form if they are interested in taking a class in the French department).
