The Jazz Band course is a linear course which will run outside the regular school day either before or after school twice per week.
This course is an additional 9th course.
NOTE: Students MUST be registered in Concert Band in the same school year (special exceptions may be made for seniors with permission from the teacher). Students will be placed in either the Intermediate or High Performance Jazz Band if there is enough enrollment for two bands. All players must have at least one year of playing experience on their instrument. All concert band instruments are welcome in the Intermediate Jazz Band, but High Performance Jazz Band instrumentation is limited to: saxophone, trumpet, trombone, string bass, piano, and drums. (*please note that percussionists must have drum set experience and be willing to play auxiliary percussion as well)
This is an enrichment course for band students who have had solid success on their instrument in previous concert band classes. It is designed to introduce students to concepts of commercial musical styles including Swing, Jazz, Rock, Latin, Dixieland, and Jazz/Rock Ballads. Students will also develop improvisational skills (creating solos over set chord progressions).
*Special Note: If enrolment allows, Intermediate and High Performance Jazz Band classes will run as two separate courses. If there is only one jazz band, enrolment will be capped according to proper jazz band instrumentation, and auditions will be held to determine placement.
