ENGLISH 10 students must select the course combination: English First Peoples Literary Studies /English First Peoples Spoken Language 10

All students in grade 10 will be required to complete four credits of First Peoples English 10 which will meet the graduation requirement for four credits of Indigenous focused coursework.

This course combination focuses on First Peoples’ literature: exploring a variety of written and oral contexts, genres, and media. Students will have the opportunity to study First Peoples’ literature and oral traditions and to develop their own oral self- expression. The course provides students with opportunities to explore personal and cultural identities, histories, stories, and connections to land/ place. It draws on First Peoples’ texts and principles of learning to contextualize the understanding that texts are socially, culturally, geographically and historically constructed. Students will work individually and collaboratively to broaden their understanding of themselves and the world, to develop their writing techniques, and to create coherent, purposeful, and engaging written and oral text.
