On November 15th in Cape Canaveral, Florida SpaceX Crew-1 Dragon was launched into space for NASA to go to the ISS (International space station).

Aboard the space flight were NASA astronauts Mike Hopkins, Victor Glover, Shannon Walker and, JAXA (Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency) astronaut Soichi Noguchi.

The space capsule itself was named “Resilience” due to the challenges of the year 2020.

The mission was historic because it is the first operational commercial crew mission to take flight as part of NASA’s Commercial Crew program, and it is also the first long-duration mission that launched from the space coast.

This is also the first time since 2011 that American astronauts do not have to rely on a Russian spacecraft to go to space.

Phil McAlister, NASA’s director of commercial space flight development, told reporters on Thursday why he thought the mission was important. “It marks the end of the development phase of the system," McAlister stated, "It may not seem that profound right now...but I believe in 20 years from now we’re going to look back at this time as a major turning point in our exploration and utilization of space.”

The mission after being delayed on Saturday due to weather launched on pad 39A at 7:27 p.m. on Sunday.

As the capsule “Resilience” makes its way to the ISS it has already given hope to all the people who were able to watch. All the people who can now take pride in America’s space agency sending astronauts again on their own soil.
