Three People Involved in a Newport News Shooting

Two separate shootings are possibly connected

Editor Paige Sibley

On Friday, April 17th, 2020, two separate shootings occurred within the same general area. Though there is no hard evidence that the shootings were connected, the administrators at the Newport News Police Department suspect the homicides to be possibly correlated.

At 11:38 pm, a man was shot just off 25th Street near Interstate 664 at an apartment complex. Officers arrived at the scene to find the man who was shot. Once medics had reached the location at 11:46 pm, he was confirmed dead. As police checked the surveillance recordings of the area, they noticed three men who can be seen fleeing the complex just after the shooting. All three of the men are of a darker complexion, wearing hoodies, and hiding their hands.

Later on, that night, the identity of the deceased victim was revealed. According to Kelly King, a reporter at the Newport News Police Department, he was a 23-year-old local of Newport News named Stephen D. White III.

At approximately 11:47 pm that same night, officers were dispatched again to a second shooting. Only this incident happened in a residential neighborhood of Oak Avenue, which is close to a mile from where the first shooting took place. When the cops reached the location, they discovered two adult men who were both shot. The men were then rushed to a hospital. Both men are deemed in good shape.

Currently, these events are still under investigation by the police. It is still unknown if these occurrences are related, but because they happened so closely together, it is implied by officials at the police department that it is considered possible.
