Joe Biden Elected President of the United States

Biden-Harris Ticket Makes History In Closer-Than Expected Victory

On November 7th, 2020, Former Vice President Joseph R. Biden Jr. was officially projected by the Associated Press and Several Cable Networks to be the winner of the 2020 Presidential Election. His victory comes after a long campaign season, and days of counting votes in key states.

With his victory, Biden becomes the oldest president ever elected to the presidency, and the second roman catholic elected to be president. His running mate, Senator Kamala Harris, will be the first woman, African-American, and Indian-American person ever to serve as Vice President. At her victory speech, she remarked that “while I may be the first woman in this office, I will not be the last.” On her selection, she praised the President-Elect, saying “what a testament it is to Joe's character that he had the audacity to break one of the most substantial barriers that exists in our country and select a woman as his vice president.” This ticket also garnered the most votes for a presidential ticket in history, and becomes the first ticket to defeat an incumbent President since Bill Clinton’s victory in 1992.

In terms of results, the Biden-Harris ticket looks apt to beat President Trump by a 306-232 electoral college margin, the same that Trump beat Hillary Clinton by in 2016. Biden carried back the ‘blue wall’ that Trump took in 2016, winning Wisconsin, Michigan, and Pennsylvania. He also made gains in the ‘sun belt,’ carrying Arizona, and being shown ahead in Georgia. Despite initially being shown ahead, the President was defeated by continuous batches of mail-in ballots from battleground states, which leaned democratic due to fears of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As of now, President Trump has yet to concede the election. Along with his legal team, Trump has made accusations of widespread voter fraud. On his Twitter account, the President said “I easily WIN the Presidency of the United States with LEGAL VOTES CAST. The OBSERVERS were not allowed, in any way, shape, or form, to do their job and therefore, votes accepted during this period must be determined to be ILLEGAL VOTES. U.S. Supreme Court should decide!” At a press conference outside of a landscaping business, Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani mocked Biden’s win, saying he believed that “networks don’t get to decide elections, courts do.” Trump, so far, has planned several press conferences in which he plans to show evidence of dead people voting.

Despite a call from all major-networks and the Associated Press, this election doesn’t look like it will end anytime soon. The Trump Campaign has made clear that it will challenge the results of the election, but top Republicans have privately maintained the belief that the path to the presidency for Trump has closed. This may be a developing story, but it is all but certain now that Joe Biden has been elected the 46th President of the United States.
