Varsity Softball Sends Phoebus Home With a Loss to Remember

Reporter Leighann Harper

On Tuesday, May 7th , our Lady Dukes softball team played against Phoebus and sent them home with a loss on their plate.

In the first inning, our team jumped ahead by seven runs after a homerun for Bridget Motley (senior) and base hits by Kirsten Greene (senior) and many more throughout the line up. Phoebus showed little energy after our Lady Dukes advanced further into the game. Leighann Harper (sophomore) stated that, “the other team’s pitching was exactly like batting practice. Most of the time the strikes were right up the middle, or high; exactly the way we like them.” Phoebus had minimal hits, and only scored one run that should not have scored. The Lady Dukes only made one error throughout the game, however it ended up costing them a run.

Our Dukes came out on top with a 22-1 win.

On Thursday, May 9th, Varsity Softball faced them again. “We could tell during the warm ups that Phoebus did not want to be there, their lack of energy was excruciating,” Harper stated.

Although the second win was not as high in the score count as the first, our Dukes still managed to shut them down early and walk away with another dub for the books.

In the third inning, Emma West (senior) stepped into the box, swung at the first pitch, and knocked the ball over the softball fence and into the baseball field. As soon as our girls saw Emma swing, they knew that it would be a bomb. They all stood, ready to greet her at home plate. Emma had mentioned to her teammate earlier in the game that she had “hit one last year over this fence, but [she] did not know if she could do it again”. She proved that she could overcome her nervousness and contribute to the scoreboard.

Coach Lindsay was ecstatic for the win, and even more grateful for the fact that his team was on the right track for regionals and states.
