Gloucester Football Scores Resounding Victory Over Kecoughtan

Reporter Makenna Keyes

On September 26, 2019, Gloucester Dukes crushed the Kecoughtan Warriors in a big victory, with a final score of 48-7. This being the highest scoring game Gloucester in a very long time. This win let the team maintain the number four spot in the Peninsula District.

With the Dukes previously securing an unexpected win over Menchville the Friday before, they worked tirelessly against Kecoughtan hoping to extend their two-game winning streak.

Starting the game off, Gloucester won the opening toss and choose to defer the call, something they have done most of the season. This allowed Coach Scalf to get his defense ready to set the tone of the game.

The Dukes defense has done a phenomenal job this season from holding runs, blocking punts, and deflecting passes. When they went against Kecoughtan they only cranked up the heat more.

Sophomore Kaleb Spencer starts his game off with a big hit forcing a fumble that was recovered by Gloucester at the 40-yard line.

Throughout the game, Spencer had a total of three interceptions and two rushing touchdowns doing an amazing performance on both sides of the ball. In all of his interceptions Spencer came out of nowhere. He repeatedly snatched away passes from the Warriors, allowing them to gain no momentum.

Gloucester had multiple drives until finally being stopped at the goal line being forced to kick a field goal. While everyone was lining up for the kick, the snap holder, Jordan Mumford, rolled over to the right and fired a touchdown pass to Brandon Pryor. This trick play put the Dukes up 7-0.

Shortly after an interception by Spencer, Lester rolled out and found senior Elliot Warley in the back of the endzone for a 44-yard touchdown. This was Warley’s first reception of the season.

Throughout the game, Gloucester’s defense was holding Kecoughtan off from scoring, with the Warriors only having one touchdown in the game. The Dukes’ defensive line Destin Forrest, Adam Eckstein, Gage Powell, and Sean Atwood held a strong wall and pressured the Kecoughtan quarterback to throw multiple interceptictions.

With a rushed pass by the Warriors, junior Josh Kuehn was able to successfully snag an interception on a man-to-man coverage.

Also on the defensive side with the pressure provided on the Kecoughtan offense, Junior Xavier Washington was able to recover a fumble. Washington also contributed offensively with two runs, both being ten or more yards, and a punt recovery of 25-yards.

Gloucester also ran the ball very well and finished the game with over 400-yards. Malakyi Cooke achieved 184-yards rushing and two touchdowns. Kenley Williams, Washington, and Pryor also contributed a large amount to the many yards by the Dukes.

Gloucester offensive had continued with the pressure on the Warriors. With great passes by Lester, the long and consistent runs by the many running backs, and a trick play on a field goal attempt.

Gloucester played as a well oiled machine on Thursday night, Ultimately being unstoppable. Friday, October 4, the Dukes will face off against Phoebus and hopefully continue their win streak. Go Dukes!
