Lady Dukes Tennis Goes Up Against Heritage and Kecoughtan

Reporter Kaylee Walls

This week Gloucester High School’s Lady Dukes Tennis Team went up against the Heritage Hurricanes on Tuesday, March 26th. The Lady Dukes won the match overall with singles and doubles. Juniors Destiny Morales, Maggie Dye, Danica McFarland, and McKenzie Sullivan all played in singles matches along with Sophomores Haley Brown and Skylar Tenan. Doubles matches included Destiny Morales and Haley Brown, Skylar Tenan and Maggie Dye, and Gracie King and Meadow Spears.

All of the doubles matches won with the game closing out at a little after seven. Morales and Brown’s match finished last with a very close game due to double faults on both Heritage’s team and the Lady Dukes team. There was lots of tension as the match closed with a tie breaker between Morales and Brown’s doubles set. Although there was quite a bit of sketchy business happening on the other team the Lady Dukes still won the match.

Junior Maggie Dye won her set two-out-of-three, with a total score coming to 7-5. In a set a player must win six games to win the set, however if the score is at 5-5 the player must win by two, making the score 7-5 to win. Most commonly sets are played best of three, so the player that wins two of the sets first wins. However, if the players each win one set then a tiebreaker can be played, typically playing the point out to ten instead of seven.

Junior Kaylee Walls played a doubles match with Ivy Mason against Tatum Foster and Olivia Rich and won six to two.

The Kecoughtan match on Thursday was postponed due to the large number of illnesses on the team. Four of the top six members were out. It will later be decided if the match is going to be rescheduled or if the Lady Dukes forfeited.
