GHS Soccer off to a Striking Start

The Dukes soccer team continued an overall winning season with a 5-3 victory against York on April 10th. This will be the Dukes fifth win of the season, which included only two losses and one draw.

The Dukes had high hopes of going to states since the beginning of March. Team Coach Craig Raines told the Gloucester Gazette Journal, “Our bench is extremely deep, I've got starters on the bench who should be playing but there's no issue with morale because the guys know they're going to pay… because of the pace we play I pretty much use my entire bench every game.”

Even though Captain of the team Sam Haley was injured within the first quarter of the game, he was still able to give the name of the Most Valuable Player, or MVP, for the game. Bobby Cox was immensely praised for scoring a whopping four goals in a single game, an impressive feat that earned him the title of MVP in the Captain.

There were several other players that have high hopes riding behind them, outside of Cox and Haley. Chandler Records, a striker on the team, is stated to have “big years,” as the Coach puts it. He also praised two freshman on the team, A.J. Goler and Cayden Brum, “very quality players,” he adds, stating that they “deserve every right to be there,”

They’ve had a mighty fine start so far, winning almost every game they have participated in. While they’re certainly aiming for districts, the coach had a lot to say about some of the other teams. “Right now, it is kind of up in the air,” the coach said, “Menchville is always strong, Kecoughtan is typically a strong team, and then Hampton is coming out of nowhere,”

That being said, there’s no doubt that the GHS Soccer Team has a big road ahead of them. “There’s no issue with morale,” said Rains, “because of the pace we play I pretty much use my entire bench every game.”
