Both Duke Lacrosse Teams tackle and defeat opponents

Considered America’s fastest growing sport, 1.6 million Americans played lacrosse last year.

Although not considered a school sponsored sport, Gloucester is still home to the Gloucester Lacrosse Club. Paid for by funds and donations, the sport is home to 30+ athletes ranging from eighth grade all the way to seniors.

The girls team, ran by Coach Eric Anderson and Coach Kathy Mixon, is at a record of four games won and only two lost. Coach Shackelford, Coach Fitzgerald, and head Coach Van Orden run the boys team with a record of three wins to one loss.

On the girls team head captain McKenzie Mowry has been playing lacrosse for four years, of those four years she has been captain for three. Mowry said her favorite part about the sport is the “family environment it gives.” During her four years she has played every position except for goalie. Thankfully she plans on continuing her lacrosse career at Norwich University in Vermont.

Alongside Mowry as co-captain, Sophomore Meghan Crowley is currently on her second year of playing lacrosse; this is her first year as co-captain. Crowley’s favorite part of lacrosse is “spending time with all the girls”. Considering she is a sophomore she is not really sure of the college she wants to go to, however, wherever she goes you will catch her on the field.

Captain of the boys team, Junior Shane Johnson says he enjoys the sport because it’s a “do what you want as you please” sport. Johnson has been playing for four years as well as being captain for two. Of those four years he’s has always played d-pole. He plans on playing lacrosse in college, however, he doesn’t know what college that will be.

Both the girls and boys team had a game this Tuesday. The girls faced off against Menchville, while the boys toughed it out against Warhill.

After an excruciating two hours in the sun, the girls wiped the floor with Menchville with a mindblowing score of 17-2. The Dukes also did amazing by keeping Menchville on one side of the field the entire first half. With the Dukes scoring back to back, Menchville was only able to get one score each half passed our goalie.

Thirty-three minutes away, the boys team was neck and neck with Warhill. With a nail biting score of 7-7, the Dukes not only went into overtime once but twice! The Dukes scored with a mid-shot in the second overtime ending the game with a score of 8-7 for another Duke win.

With it being mid-season for lacrosse, the season can go either way, but as it

stands right now. The girls stand at a record of 5-2 while the boys stand with a record of 4-1.

All in all the season is going great for both girls and boys.
