Dukes Varsity Baseball Team outplays Denbigh

Reporter James Turner

Our very own Varsity Dukes baseball team played against Denbigh twice on April 10th and on April 11th.

In the first game played at Denbigh, our boys played hard and pulled ahead early in the game to end with the final score of 5-1. The pitching was not nearly as competitive as it is on other teams, however, our Dukes struggled early on with batting, but managed to pull through in the end. Denbigh's lack of all around arm strength hurt them the most, as well as the fact that most of them seemingly did not know what to do with the ball as soon as they received it.

Their second game, on April 11, was played on the Dukes’ home field, and the pace of the game steadily got faster and faster within the first two innings as our varsity dukes battled to the top.

The Dukes, leading off with defense and shutting down Denbigh, stomped their throats early on and maintained a score of 11-0. The Dukes then followed up with their hitting by gathering hit after hit, staying aggressive on the bases, and scoring 4 in the first, and then 3 more in the 3rd inning.

Sophomore Hunter Sturgeon, 3rd baseman for the game, had an excellent play toward the end of the game. A ball was hit to his glove side, (closer to the shortstop) and he busted his tail to get to it and make the intense play at first base, getting the runner out. Though Dukes baseball does not play Denbigh again this season, they respected the saying that tells them to never waste a game, and managed to jump ahead in both games, taking the dub and building their team confidence that will carry them through this year’s season.
