Sal's Pizza

Editor Amber Howel

On Friday February 22, I ate at Sal’s Sicilian Pizza & Restaurant. Sal’s is a Sicilian restaurant located in Hayes, Virginia on route 17. It is described as an “Easygoing pizzeria serving up pies & casual Italian dishes in a warm space with painted wall murals” by Google. The Sicilian Pizzeria has an extraordinary reputation around the Gloucester area and is normally pretty busy. Sal’s has been many teenagers first job and has employed many Gloucester residents over the years.

Sal’s lobby has a lovely mood and always makes me feel at home. The mural inside is a sight to be seen and gives the lobby an inviting feel. The arches give off a real italian vibe. The tables and chairs are very comfortable and roomy. There is barley ever a wait for a table, and normally you can choose to sit where you want.

The service is speedy and the waitresses and waiters are courteous and quick. They know exactly what to say and have the perfect manners. Refills on drinks come swiftly and are correct. The food comes quickly and is delicious.

The food is very good other than the fair amounts of grease on the pizza, but the pizza is pretty tasty otherwise. The items on the menu are very appetizing and affordable. There is a wide variety of subs, pizzas, calzones, pastas, salads, and other Italian foods. They carry Pepsi products and alcohol. Sophomore Lainey Blanks stated, “Can I just say that I can guarantee that you will have an almost holy experience from simply being exposed to succulent Italy esque gourmet foods dripped, cooked, and blessed, most likely from the Italian Pope himself, to cheesey perfection.”

Whenever going to Sal’s I always grab a meatball sub and fries. The sub roll is crunchy and flavorful, and the meatballs sit perfectly in its bread blanket. The fries are not too soft but also not too crispy and have the perfect amount of salt.

The price of food at Sal’s is pretty reasonable for what you can get. It isn’t fast food, but it also isn’t super expensive either. It is a great price of tasty Sicilian food and doesn't break the bank. A family of four can eat for under $60.

The restaurant has employed many people in the area, and it is a first job spot for many teens. Many Gloucester High School students have worked at Sal’s. Junior Kaylee Walls says “Working at Sal’s is quite the experience. I kinda sucked at my job but there are definitely perks. You get free food from a list or you can pay for some food for like twenty five percent off. Their pizza is bangin.”

Sal’s is always my recurring choice of places to eat. It always makes me feel at home. Everything is great about Sal’s and there are no bad words that come to mind. I think Sal’s is one of the best restaurants in Gloucester and is absolutely worth it.
