Off duty Gloucester County deputy shot after confronting car thief

Unknown Officer in Stable condition

A Gloucester Sheriff’s deputy remains in stable condition after he was shot in the Tabb Lake's subdivision on Monday for attempting to halt a car robbery.

Authorities say the suspect, who is now identified as 21 year old Jordan Hilliard, was breaking into different vehicles along the street of the deputy’s residence.

The homeowner, whom Hillard had shot, happened to be a Gloucester county deputy.

Hillard now faces 12 charges on 15 warrants.

Those charges include attempted capital murder, aggravated malicious wounding, shooting a gun in a public place, using a firearm in the commission of a felony, unlawfully wounding while in the commission of a felony, and shooting into an occupied dwelling - and a slew of misdemeanors.

The Gloucester County Sheriff's Office confirmed the man shot is confirmed to be a Gloucester County deputy, but states that they are refusing to give the name out to the public.

One of the neighbors of the victim, spoke on the incident. Nathan de van Graaf states that he heard multiple gunshots around 4:00 Monday morning, but was unsure of their origin.

“We weren’t 100% sure it was gunshots then we woke up this morning and were just happy to hear that our neighbor and fellow officer from the neighboring county is fine. “
