World language clubs at GHS celebrate Mardi Gras

Editor Paige Sibley

On March 6th, Gloucester High School hosted their annual carnival celebrating Mardi Gras. The event held a variety of activities and several different cultural foods that are common during the Mardi Gras celebration.

After attending the carnival, Junior at Gloucester High School and French Club vice president, Cody Brown commented “It went beyond my expectations. I was surprised by the amount of cultural food.” Brown mainly enjoys participating in school events such as Mardi Gras for the experience of enjoying diverse cultures.

Brown says “we should be informed about the tradition of Mardi Gras since large celebrations happen in our very own country.”

When asked to describe the scene, Brown mentions “I first noticed the music. It created a good environment to celebrate Mardi Gras.”

“Then I saw some hula hoops for the hula hoop contest,” Brown adds, “they also had facepaint and I thought that could be pretty fun.” In addition to the games, food, and facepaint, the event also had a mask-making station.

“The masks, creating the masks was also really fun. We got to keep them. And pretty much make them however we wanted,” said Brown.

When asked how the celebration could improve, Brown recommends the clubs “make it more known to the school. I don't know if many people outside of a forgien language class knew about it.” She acknowledges that the turnout was “more people than i expected, but i definitely think there was room for more.”

After experiencing all the carnival had to offer, Brown commends the staff that helped plan the event saying “the teachers did a great job setting up everything as well as the spanish club officers.”
