On Wednesday, April 17, several talented Gloucester athletes were officially signed to various colleges to continue their athletic careers. The ceremony was attended by the athletes families and friends, who eagerly looked on as these students began their next exciting chapter of their lives.

Most students have played sports for a long time and it would be hard for them to just give up on the sport their playing. “Basketball has been my whole life ever since I was 5, I could not imagine not playing anymore” said, Senior Cameron O’Neil, who will be continuing her athletic career at Randolph College. “I’m just really good at it and enjoy it” mumbled, Senior Andrew Coxe. Senior Josh Shackelford, who will be continuing to do track and field at William & Mary, was formerly a soccer player before he fell in love with football in 8th grade.

When it comes to choosing a college, students look into the academics and the view of the college, or maybe even the sports. “The campus is beautiful, great atmosphere” admitted, Senior Andrew Coxe. Coxe will be joining CNU to pursue his football career. Senior Madison Hodges, who also will be joining CNU, wants to focus on academics. “Overall the coach for sports and Randolph was the highest academic school I looked at” responded Senior Cameron O’Neil. “The academic and sports combined is good and still has time to grow, one of the top in the nation” explained Senior Josh Shackelford.

Students have played sports ever since they were very young, such as Senior Madison Hodges, who has been playing field hockey since she was eight, and Senior Cameron O’Neil, has been playing basketball ever since she was five. Some students did not get interested until they were a little older. However, Senior Andrew Coxe did not start playing football until his junior year and Senior Josh Shackelford did not start track until the 8th grade.

Students who decide to continue their athletic career in college, may ask for advice or words of encouragement from someone who is or has continued to pursue their athletic career in college. “Consecutive days off are fun, but in the long run they hurt more than help. Also, value your grades more than sports” insisted, Senior Cameron O’Neil. “Always stay persistent” replied, Senior Madison Hodges. Also, Senior Andrew Coxe responded, “Don’t get down on yourself, just keep pushing on.”
