Gloucester High School Participates in Annual Foreign Language Week

Editor Andrew Casteneda

Annually, the first week of March marks the National Foreign Language Week to which Gloucester High School participates in every year. Foreign Language Week aims to raise awareness of other cultures - their foods, customs, phrases, and of course, their languages.

As a yearly tradition, foreign language students at Gloucester High School individually design and produce posters based around a yearly released theme. This year’s theme: “Languages Are the Key to the World”.

Traditionally, Foreign Language week has rounded off with a Foreign Language Banquet, an extravagant celebration complete with a wide variety of homemade foreign foods and musical entertainment. This year, however and unfortunately, did not have a banquet

Although, this year’s celebration was hallmarked by something new - a donation contest between every foreign language teacher to see who can contribute the most to the foreign language budget. The winner’s reward: a pie in the face.

As one anonymous sophomore said, “Learning foreign languages and culture will lead us into the future. If we can learn to understand each other, we can possibly find some worldwide peace.”

“I like foreign language week, it teaches us to be diverse.” Junior Jesse Starcher proclaimed. “I will say, I am disappointed that there wasn’t a second banquet this year. In my opinion, it was the best part of the year!”

As Sophomore Lainey Blanks put it, “Jesse vil drepe deg i navnet pa lorn banketten!” The Dukes Dispatch does not know what this means, but she also said something in English by the lines of, “Foreign Language Week teaches us to be unified by our differences.”
