Editor Kyle Husky

A month before the Oscars, actors Issa Rae and John Cho announced the 2020 nominations for the 92nd annual award show.

Leading the list of the most nominations, Joaquin Phoenix’s “Joker” takes 11 total nominations. “1917” follows close behind with 10, as well as “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “The Irishman”.

Nine films were chosen to compete in the “Best Picture” category. The nominees are “Ford V Ferrari”, “The Irishman”, “Jojo Rabbit”, “Joker”, “Little Women”, “Marriage Story”, “1917”, “Once Upon a Time In Hollywood”, and “Parasite”, which is the first Korean film to be nominated for best picture. Following this category is the esteemed “Actor in a leading role” and “Actress in a leading role” categories. Nominees for these include Leonardo Dicaprio in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, Joaquin Phoenix in “Joker”, Scarlett Johansson in “Marriage Story”, and Cynthia Erivo in “Harriet”. Actors and Actresses in the “Supporting Roles” categories include Al Pacino and Joe Pesci in “The Irishman”, Tom Hanks in “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood”, Kathy Bates in “Richard Jewell”, and Margot Robbie in “Bombshell”.

Smaller, although just as important categories, include cinematography, costume design, film editing, and music. Of these categories, all include “Joker”, and almost all include “The Irishman” and “1917”.

In the animated film category, there were five nominees. These are “How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World”, “I Lost My Body”, “Klaus”, “Missing Link”, and “Toy Story 4”. Nominees in the animated short film category are “Dcera (Daughter)”, “Hair Love”, “Kitbull”, “Memorable”, and “Sister”.

Soon after the nominees were announced, many people and media companies voiced their predictions for the award show. Many believe that “1917” will take the trophy this year, with its great digital effects and having already won a Golden Globe this year; however, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Parasite” follow close in many’s predictions. As for the Best Actor and Best Actress categories, most believe that Joaquin Phoenix in “Joker” and Renee Zellweger in “Judy” will win. In the Best supporting actor and actress categories, Brad Pitt in “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and Laura Dern in “Marriage Story”. Although many believe Quentin Tarantino will win for his film “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood”, most want Bong Joon Ho for “Parasite” to win.

People have expressed their distaste with the academy picking mostly white and male nominees,

Winners will be revealed on the Oscars on Sunday, February 9th at 8pm Eastern Standard Time on channel ABC.
