Songs that might actually scare you this Halloween

Reporter Audrey Horn

Rock and heavy metal are historically known for their harsh and often violent lyrical content. It is not so often brought up that these two genres make perfect soundtracks for a season known for its many scares.

10-Hammer Smashed Face by Cannibal Corpse

This fast paced death metal track is one of many in Cannibal Corpse’s discography that could fit the season. Due to the often violent and vulgar nature of the band’s song titles, I had to choose one that wasn’t. The reason why Cannibal Corpse’s discography is perfect for the season is because all of their songs describe someone being brutally murdered in quite graphic detail. But the upside to their music is that you can hardly make out the lyrics due to George “Corpsegrinder” Fisher’s deep growls and the loud fast guitars that also make their music good to headbang to.

9-Misfits (In General)

This legendary horror punk band from New Jersey is known for mixing fast based guitars and raw vocals with horror and science fiction based imagery, despite the fact that they have gone through many lineup changes with Doyle being the only constant member and five lead singers since their conception in 1977. The Glenn Danzig era from 1977-1983 Misfits is a fan favorite. One album that I particularly recommend is the 1982 album “Walk Among Us.” You will be screaming “mommy can I go out and kill tonight” at the top of your lungs. The song “Skull” is intoxicating as well.

8-Reign In Blood (album) by Slayer

This is one of heavy metal’s “big four.” Slayers third studio album had zero replay upon release and drew controversy due to the Josef Mengele inspired lyrics of “Angel Of Death”. It revolutionized music also known for violent imagery. The lyrics to “Altar Of Sacrifice” are particularly spine chilling. As they depict the ritualistic sacrifice of someone.

7-Broadcasting From Beyond the Grave by Motionless In White

This is a newer track on this list. This song was released in june of 2019 by Motionless In White fifth studio album Disguise. The song is very “emo” with elements of electronic. It uses the format of a radio show that has the concept that focuses on monsters and the afterlife is enough to warrant it a spot on this list. Another song off of this album which I would highly recommend for the season is Undead Ahead 2.

6-Rats by Ghost

This song by Swedish band Ghost focuses primarily on the Bubonic Plague outbreak that wiped out half of Europe. Tobias Forge’s voice is perfect for Halloween, along with Ghost’s “opposite Catholic Church” image of skeletons and demons is another perk that lands this band on the list.

5-Bela Lugosi’s Dead by Bauhaus

This is the classic goth track that started it all. This track is long but mainly atmospheric. The eerie sound of the song and the few lyrics that focus on Dracula actor Bela Lugosi and his now famous role make this an essential for the season. Peter Murphy’s raw sounding yet very deadpan vocals add to the Halloween atmosphere that the song already emits so powerfully.

4-Vampiro-Blind Fool Love

This track from Italian rock band Blind Fool Love is one that most of you reading will probably have to look up the lyrics to in Google Translate. They roughly translate to a song depicting a vampire hunting and killing his prey. The song which is told from the vampire’s point of view is both a beautiful yet chilling track when you can understand the lyrics.

3-Curse of the Werewolf by Timeless Miracle

This track by Timeless Miracle has music that will more “pump you up” than frighten you for the season. The lyrics tell the story of a werewolf who is trying to suppress his “wolf side” and remain human, but, in the end the pull of the full moon always wins and he ends up killing many people as a result.

2-Mein Teil by Rammstein

This gut-churning song by German metal band Rammtein tells the story of a man who murders a man he met online and subsequently eats his body. The song is chilling and received much censorship in germany upon its release.

1-Hallowed be thy Name by Iron Maiden

This track off the album that cemented Bruce Dickenson’s name in heavy metal history. The song tells the story of a man who is convicted of a crime and executed. It is perfect for the season because of it’s lyrical content and its fast driving sound.

In conclusion, what music you choose to play on Halloween is ultimately up to you.Your picks may or may not be on this list.
