About

Band and Orchestra Festival is an opportunity for ensembles from member schools to perform a program of three pieces for adjudication, one of which must be from MSBOA's required list. District-level festivals are held at the end of February through the beginning of March. Each group is evaluated by three performance judges and one sight-reading judge.

Scoring

Ensembles are rated on a scale from 1 to 5 with 1 being the highest rating possible. The overall score is computed using a formula which combines the ratings of each judge. Ensembles that earn an overall 1 rating (or "Superior") are qualified for State Band & Orchestra Festival which is held in late April or early May. The basic structure of State Band & Orchestra Festival is the same as District, but the ensembles are held to a higher standard. Participating ensembles that earn a rating of 1 or 2 at District or State Festivals receive a certificate and are eligible to purchase plaques for display at their school and medals for each student.

PARENT INFORMATION

A FEW THINGS FOR OUR PARENTS

Your support is GREATLY appreciated and NEEDED. Your son or daughter has been working since the Holiday Concert for this performance. Please help me keep this stressful day running smoothly by following the guidelines below. THANK YOU!

Picking up Your Student

Please make sure that you have someone available to pick up your student promptly at the end of our day. We advise students to call home on their cell phone prior to arriving back at the high school.

Coat-Room and Warm-Up Room:

We will be working hard to keep the students focused on their performance. Unless you are a chaperone, please wait until after the performance to say hi to your son or daughter. I will be asking that only chaperones be allowed in these rooms. The less distractions, the better for the students!

Audio and Video Taping:

According to the rules and guidelines of MSBOA, no one is allowed to audio tape or videotape any part of the performance (concert or sight reading). Audio and video taping this performance breaks copyright laws. Any video cameras or audio taping devices will be removed by a MSBOA official.

Sight-Reading:

Following the stage performance, the group will be moved to another room to complete the sight-reading portion of the evening. Parents and friends are allowed and encouraged to watch the group in sight reading!
