Explorer Programs

Are you interested in exploring a career in public safety? There are many youth programs that can help you learn about this field and the steps needed to successfully enter it. 

Explorers get a combination of classroom trainings and hands on experience that teaches them about the rigorous and challenging field of law enforcement.  It is open to young men and women between the ages of 14 and 20, who have completed the 8th grade. Explorers receive instruction in the following areas: Laws of Arrest, Arrest Techniques, Defensive Tactics, Firearms, Crime Scene Management, Fingerprinting, Traffic Control, Using Two-Way Radios, Report Writing.

The Sonoma County Sheriff's Office's Youth Community Academy will provide high school teens ages 13-18 with an inside look at local law enforcement. The five day academy is designed to give teens the opportunity to learn about the Sheriff’s Office, its operations and gain knowledge and understanding of the functions and responsibilities of providing law enforcement services in Sonoma County.

APPLICATIONS FOR PROGRAM OPEN IN SPRING; DUE BY APRIL. PROGRAM RUNS IN JUNE.

The California Highway Patrol's Explorer Program is designed for young men and women, 15 to 21 years of age, allowing them to develop the skills and knowledge needed to serve the people of California through discipline and a commitment to serving their community. Explorers assist the CHP both in office and out in the field. Explorers receive physical fitness training, medical training, organizational, and clerical training. As an Explorer, you'll attend Community Service events, staff DUI Checkpoints, participate in a ride along in the field, and compete in Explorer Competitions.

The Cotati Police Department Cadet Program is a group of young men and women 14-21 years of age who are interested in getting a closer look at law enforcement work by participating as Police Cadets. It is an opportunity to gain first-hand experience in the law enforcement field and the chance to view it as a career choice. Rolling submissions. See required documents to apply on the website.

FBI/CIA

FBI Teen Academy

The Teen Academy program allows high school students an opportunity to get a comprehensive look into today’s FBI. Generally, each course iteration is a minimum of eight hours, but can be a week-long program with blocks of instruction and demonstrations at a local field office. Students are provided with several presentations on topics including terrorism, cybercrime, public corruption, polygraph exams, evidence response, SWAT, and the day-to-day operations of a typical FBI office. Students also learn from special agents, intelligence analysts, language specialists, and professional staff about investigative tactics that include gathering evidence, interviewing witnesses, and assisting with cases.
