Nursing

Nursing is a very popular and impacted major. Doing research on programs and pathways is important if you are considering this career pathway.

This PDF slideshow provides an introduction to different pathways to nursing. This is provided by two college professionals that work in nursing program admission and/or support nursing applicants in California.

USEFUL TERMS FOR NURSING MAJORS RESEARCHING PROGRAMS:

DIRECT ENTRY NURSING PROGRAMS: If awarded entry, these students are guaranteed a spot in the institution's nursing major; and provided they meet course requirements, can be assured that they will graduate with a nursing degree. These programs include any required courses as part of the coursework. There are many direct-entry BSN programs students can apply to directly from high school, but not all programs are direct-entry.

PRE-NURSING NURSING: The pre-nursing degree is a two-year program that prepares students for enrollment in a four-year nursing program. Some schools only offer pre-nursing to incoming freshmen. Some schools may also call this "Pre-Health" or require you to apply as a Health Sciences major. A pre-nursing major allows students to experience the coursework for nurses and gives additional time for students to volunteer in the field before fully committing to a four-year degree.

After completing the necessary courses (pre-requisites) you will be prepared to apply to the nursing program (often the last two years at a 4-year university). Typical courses a pre-nursing student will study include microbiology, statistics, developmental psychology, and anatomy and physiology. (Definition source)

TEAS: The TEAS (Test of Essential Academic Skills) is designed specifically to assess a student's preparedness entering the health science fields. This is sometimes required for entry into the clinical portion of nursing programs. More info here: https://www.atitesting.com/teas/register

Use this search tool to research nursing programs in the CSU system. Not all campuses offer nursing, so researching programs along with campuses is a good idea! Keep in mind that some CSU programs are direct entry and some will require a second application during the second year for admit into the nursing program after pre-reqs.

This list provides basic information on national programs offering direct entry. Direct entry guarantees you a spot in a nursing program, and can be a desirable program for a student who is very committed to pursuing nursing and completing their degree in 4 years. The California Board of Registerd Nursing provides this list of all accredited nursing programs in California, and includes ADN (2-year community college) and BSN (4-year bachelor's) programs. This list includes direct entry and pre-nursing programs (pre-reqs required before applying).
