Frank Ritter was a founding member in the Rochester Athenaeum and Mechanics Institute. He later founded his company, the Ritter Company, which made dental furniture such as the infamous dental chair.
Frank Ritter Shumway, Frank Ritter's grandson, was an avid figure skater and generous contributor to RIT, and wanted to ensure that the new arena built on the Henrietta Campus was named in his grandfather's honor.
