Greetings Calhoun Families!
Can you believe how fast the first seven weeks of school have flown by? We are quickly approaching October and with that, the end of our first nine-week grading period. As we head into this important time, I want to encourage all of our students to dig deep, stay focused, and finish strong. Let's set the tone for the 2024-2025 school year by giving our best effort and reaching our goals!
This month, our IB/MYP learner profile focus is Inquirer. I challenge each and every one of you, as well as our Calhoun community, to tap into the curiosity and problem-solving mindset that defines an inquirer. Whether it's finding solutions to personal challenges or thinking about ways to better our community, being an inquirer helps us grow as learners and as individuals.
This week also marked the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, and I want to take a moment to recognize the beautiful diversity that makes Calhoun Middle School so special. Our different cultures and identities are what make us strong, and as IB/MYP learners, we are called to celebrate each other's uniqueness. Let’s come together as a community to embrace and uplift one another during this time of celebration!
In the coming weeks, our students will participate in an important presentation on online safety, the importance of saying something when you see something, and the seriousness of making threats—even if meant as a joke. Keeping our school safe is a responsibility we all share, and I urge everyone to take this matter seriously. More information for parents is to come.
Finally, I want to leave you with a message of togetherness. We have the incredible opportunity to write the opening chapter of the Calhoun Colts' legacy—in our new building and with our new mascot. Let’s make it a story of unity, determination, and pride in our school and in each other.
Thank you for all you do to make our school a vibrant and welcoming place. Let’s continue to work together to create an amazing future for Calhoun Middle School!
Go Colts!
Mrs. San Miguel
At Calhoun Middle School, our mission is to cultivate a healthy school culture where we continuously collaborate and embrace necessary change to ensure student learning in an ever-evolving global community.
As we kick off Hispanic Heritage Month at Calhoun Middle School, we are excited to celebrate the rich history, diverse cultures, and countless contributions of the Hispanic community. We believe that understanding and appreciating diverse perspectives is key to becoming internationally minded, a cornerstone of our IB/MYP program. Hispanic Heritage Month perfectly aligns with the values we promote in the IB/MYP, supporting international-mindedness and encouraging students to become more aware of their own identity while respecting and valuing the cultural identities of others.
Across campus, you’ll see displays in the library and hallways honoring influential Hispanic figures and historical milestones.
In our dual language class, Ms. Lopez has guided students through an exciting project titled Personajes del Mundo Hispánico (Influential Spanish-Speaking People). Students selected inspiring figures from a collection of books and created anchor charts in both Spanish and English, utilizing vocabulary from the texts. Each student wrote a summary of their chosen book and will present their findings to the class, fostering a rich bilingual learning experience. This project highlights the diversity within the Spanish-speaking world and allows students to share their learning with peers.
In addition, our PTA is working on a special Hispanic Heritage Month display and is asking the Calhoun community for contributions. If you have any photos, decorations, memorabilia, flags, or other items that reflect Hispanic culture and heritage, please consider contributing. A flyer with more details is included in this newsletter.
Finally, we want to invite everyone to our Hispanic Heritage Month celebration on November 8th from 6PM-8PM. It will be a lively evening of cultural celebration featuring performances, local vendors, art, and food. Mark your calendars—this is an event you won’t want to miss!
Thank you for joining us in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and for your continued support in creating a culturally rich and inclusive environment here at Calhoun Middle School.
We are so proud of our Lady Colts for their hard work and dedication on the court! Here's to an amazing season ahead—keep bringing the energy and teamwork to every game. Let’s go, Colts!
What is the Colt Stampede Fun Run?
A fun and exciting fundraiser where students will run through obstacle courses and complete tasks at various stations.
Students will have the chance to participate as many times as possible, challenging themselves to complete more and more!
Why are we doing this?
The PTA is raising money to directly support enrichment activities and the purchase of special supplies to benefit all CMS students.
Your donations will help fund:
Grade-level field trips
Parent engagement nights
Special classroom supplies
And much more!
Donation Pages: There will be a donation page to share with friends and family to donate in a student's name.
Pledges: Supporters can pledge donations based on the completion of the obstacle course and stations or make a flat donation.
Encourage Participation: Students will win tickets to enter drawings for prizes and experiences based on donations.
All students will get to participate in Colt Stampede, no matter the donation.
The goal is to raise money for CMS, but most important is that our students have fun!
When is it happening?
Kickoff Date: October 2, 2024: The donation portal opens on this day. There will be fun whole-campus prizes with each donation milestone reached.
Stampede: October 11, 2024: Students will participate in the Colt Stampede Fun Run.
September
Every month this school year, CMS will focus on one learner profile as a campus. For the month of September, we are INQUIRERS!
Each of the learner profiles includes a "We" statement that describes how to show the learner profile and why the learner profile is important. Discuss the "We" statement for this month with your student and encourage them to strive to see themselves as an IB INQUIRER.
As Inquirers, we embrace curiosity and seek to understand the world around us. We ask questions, explore new ideas, and engage in critical thinking to deepen our knowledge. Being an MYP inquirer means we are not afraid to challenge ourselves and learn from our experiences. We foster a lifelong love of learning.
